While the New Zealand Mints popular Disney range is at its numismatic best when concentrating on the classic Disney of old, it cannot be denied that the modern movies also attract a rich following. Case in point has been the juggernaut that is the Frozen franchise. Spawning a range of six coloured coins, a hit movie usually leads to a surge in merchandised product. The NZM is obviously hoping that Disney’s latest movie, Moana, enjoys a similarly huge following.

A single coin has been announced for this new movie and it fits in well with others in the Modern Disney range, being a one-ounce coloured silver coin. Depicting the main promotional image for the movie, the design is distinctive, highly colourful and fits the coin area extremely well. Some cool native-style engraving adorns the main background field. Packaging is likewise very bright and attractive, the whole thing having huge shelf appeal for the movie buff. Comprising a coin holder that sits inside a slipcase, it’s a design the NZ Mint uses on several series. Again, it’s less one for the pure numismatic collector, and more one for the movie fan.

Moana is an upcoming 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical fantasy comedy adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, the 56th Disney animated feature film. It is being directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, and co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams. The film introduces Auli’i Cravalho as Moana and features Dwayne Johnson as Maui. The film’s songs were co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It is scheduled to be released by Walt Disney Pictures on November 23, 2016.
