Dead Men Tell No Tales, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 hits the proof silver coin world
Heavily into popular culture and movie franchise coins as they are, it’s no surprise that the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales movie due out next month is being given the proof silver coin treatment by the New Zealand Mint. Heavily involved with the Disney-owned Star Wars licence and with coins depicting Disney’s core characters, it was a small step to commemorating the fifth of this staggeringly successful series of blockbusters.
This is a typical NZ Mint design, a one-ounce proof-finish silver coin with a selectively coloured image on the reverse face. The image is based on one of the many movie posters surrounding the release and is clearly aimed at the movie memorabilia market rather than the outright coin collector. The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse is typical of the mints Niue issued coins.
These are the kinds of coins that will help keep interest in modern numismatics alive. Hardcore coin collectors will be looking at the latest in high-relief or antique-finished launches, but this type of coin will hopefully help bring new blood into the market. It does work, we’ve got multiple examples of movie memorabilia buyers picking up this kind of coin and then getting into buying the more ‘numismatical’ products out there, always a good thing.
This one will sell for $80.00 USD and will be available from later today. It’s a colourful, crisp design, sure to please fans of the movie. The wooden chest packaging, brought over from the mints Journeys of Discovery series, is an appropriate touch and the outer shipper is strikingly designed. The mintage is set at 10,000 pieces.
DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (also known as Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge outside the US and Japan) is the fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. The film is directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg from a script by Jeff Nathanson. Johnny Depp, Kevin McNally, and Geoffrey Rush reprise their roles as Jack Sparrow, Joshamee Gibbs, and Hector Barbossa, respectively. The film also stars Javier Bardem as Armando Salazar, Brenton Thwaites as Henry Turner, and Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth. The film also features the return of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann respectively, following their absence from the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides.
Captain Jack Sparrow is pursued by an old rival, Armando Salazar, who along with his Spanish Navy ghost crew has escaped from the Devil’s Triangle, and is determined to kill every pirate at sea. Jack seeks the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that grants its possessor total control over the seas, in order to defeat Salazar.
The film will be released on May 26 in the United States.
