Downies joins the Wedge-Tailed Eagle appreciation society with a new ultra-high relief silver coin

A staple of the bullion coin world since the launch of the superb John Mercanti design for the Perth Mint back in early 2014, the Wedge Tailed Eagle has appeared several times since on coins for other producers. The latest to join the market is a high-relief portrait of the bird that is issued for Niue by Australian dealer, Downies.

Antique-finished, this has a striking look with more than a little intensity to it. The title inscription ‘WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE’ is placed in a position that isn’t too intrusive, and the rest of the reverse face is free of them. All told, a good-looking piece of work. The obverse is a standard Niue affair, with the Ian Rank Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in the centre, surrounded by the issue and composition details.

An ounce in weight, there looks to be an impressive amount of relief for the size of the coin. The mintage is a fairly tight 750 pieces and the coin is presented in a box with a certificate of authenticity. Available now, it has a recommended price of $169.00 AUD.
