Agoro are broadening their portfolio to include multiple new pop-culture franchises, with coins and foils
One of the more prolific producers out there are Agoro, the collectible department of the New Zealand Mint, and, except for some isolated ranges, they’re concentrated on the television and film markets almost exclusively. Franchises, like Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter, DC Comics, and Star Trek, have been the mainstay of their output for over a decade, but recently, they’ve expanded that reach to bring in some new ones.
Of late, we’ve seen Avatar: The Last Airbender, Invincible, Looney Tunes, Gremlins, Nickelodeon, and even my beloved South Park, getting the numismatic treatment, utilising everything from huge silver foils, down to randomised trading coins. If you have a taste for collecting film and TV memorabilia, there’s likely something for you in Agoro’s range. Below is a mix of some of the more unusual releases, not the Star Wars et al. that are more common. Enjoy.
AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER: APPA AND MOMO
Telling the story of 12-year-old Aang, Avatar: The Last Airbender, despite its Asian art style and story, is actually an American production. In this world, the Avatar is someone that can telekinetically manipulate all four of the elements – air, fire, water, earth – and bring balance to the four groups. A recent Netflix live-action adaptation has reinvigorated interest in the show.
Agoro have already issued a range of five one-ounce coins in their ‘Chibi’ style, featuring the main characters, and a 5 gram silver foil depicting the cast, but this latest issue, due later today, is one of their larger, one-ounce silver foils. These are huge for that weight, akin to a DC or Marvel comic book in size, so they’re great at showcasing artwork. This one features Appa and Momo, the two main non-human characters. Good-looking art, and some nice theming on the obverse, make this a nice release for the Avatar fan.

NICKELODEON: GARFIELD & OPIE
Who doesn’t love Garfield? The cynical laid back ginger cat has been a hit for close to half a century, since its creation by Jim Davis, and has been a staple of newspapers ever since, peaking at syndication in over 2,500 newspapers and journals, holding the world record for it. Television, and even Hollywood films, where he was voiced by Bill Murray, beckoned, and Garfield has remained equally popular.
The coin is particularly apt, choosing to reproduce one of the countless comic strips, in this case one of his classic interactions with his canine nemesis, Odie. The elongated shape of the coin is absolutely perfect for the design, and is a nice example of Agoro using more imaginative formats rather than the less adventurous ones that have marked much of their output. This is the third of five coins in this series, and will also be available to buy later today.

INVINCIBLE: SEASON 01 & SEASON 02
A huge hit, the adult-orientated superhero cartoon is surprisingly good, and features an all-star cast, reading like a Who’s Who of Hollywood and genre favourites. This is no quick knock-off, but a well-crafted tale that has just completed its third season, with more to come. Highly recommended to those looking for a bit more than the usual basic good vs evil story in their superhero comics.
These are also premium foils, with their big dimensions, and they each depict the season poster for the show. Season 1 has been out for a while, and season 2 was issued just last week. Both are superb, and balance the colour part of the original artwork, with the silver of the foil, really well. The blood splats on the obverse are a nice touch, although the theming on this side is quite subdued. Nice to see something like Invincible get some attention.

DISNEY FANTASIA (two-piece set)
One of Disney’s greatest animated classics, Fantasia has rarely been done justice on coins, but that looks to have changed with this fine release. There are two pieces in this set, both very different to each other. The five gram silver foil, which Agoro are calling ‘postcards’, bears one of the most iconic scenes from the film on its reverse face, the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The obverse is brilliant, filled with concept sketches from the Disney archive. It’s fantastic to finally see the back face of these expansive foils finally put to good use.
The second piece is a shaped, one-ounce silver coin featuring the eponymous hero of the story. It’s a terrific depiction, with some restrained colouring, and again, having some theming on the obverse. It all comes beautifully presented, and is sure to appeal to the legions of fans of the original classic movie.

LOONEY TUNES DOUBLE TROUBLE: WILE E. COYOTE & ROAD RUNNER
As a fan of the original cartoon, and who isn’t, this coin is just brilliant. Wile E. Coyote and the Road-Runner, have been battling each other, one with speed, and the other with the help of Acme, for decades, and their adventures have been laugh out loud funny over all of that period.
The coin takes that Garfield style and gives us a scene that perfectly encapsulates the show in a single scene, missing only the ‘Acme’ logo on the rocket. The confident cheekiness of the bird, the hopeless optimism of the coyote, and the sheer absurdity of it, are all present in this terrific panorama. The obverse continues the recent trend at Agoro of theming it, and it’s with another classic scene. One of my favourite releases from Agoro for some time, missing just a little high-relief to give it more pop.

WINNIE THE POOH: SHAPED COINS
Winnie the Pooh, originally written by A.A. Milne and drawn by E.H. Shepard, has been a perennial children’s favourite for many decades. The Royal Mint has been the primary issuer of Pooh money over the last decade, but Agoro seems to have taken it to heart recently, with a new three-issue series of shaped silver coins, depicting the popular bear and his entourage.
With the release of ‘A Smackerel of Hunny’, the series has now concluded, and you can see it, and the second coin, ‘I Love Hunny Too’, above. These are fine depictions of the friendship between the characters, and their shared like of the golden liquid. The packaging returns to that book-style that has long been a fixture at the New Zealand Mint, and it works well for literary releases. A fine package for the fans.
