A round-up of the New Zealand Mint’s varied recent coin releases in the movie and television world

A little look at some of the new issues put out there by the New Zealand Mint, includes additions to their five-ounce commemoration of Warner Brothers Studio’s centenary, as well as a new Comix comic book cover coin, and a highly original design marking the 60th anniversary of the movie-goers favourite, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The comic book world continues to be a focus for them, with a new seven coin series with a shape designed to be placed in a collector’s box to form a roundel. Not shown here are a couple of new Chibi releases. Lando Calrissian represents the Star Wars franchise, and Robin the DC Comics universe. Also out is the shaped Millennium Falcon, putting in yet another annual appearance. We’ve had one-ounce and three-ounce versions, and now there’s a two-ounce coin. They’re all aesthetically identical. All the coins are available to order now.

WARNER BROTHERS 100: BLADE RUNNER

The next issue in a series, celebrating 100 years of Warner Brothers Studios, is an absolute classic of the science-fiction genre – Blade Runner. An awesome film, with some phenomenal performances, especially by the late Rutger Hauer as replicant Roy Batty. The design is quite unexpected, eschewing the brilliant original movie poster for an 80s looking interpretation of the infamous Voight-Kampff testing machine. This was designed to measure responses to questions that would determine if the subject was human or replicant.

It looks okay, but is an ill fit for the coin format, leaving a huge expanse of negative space. It has some neat retro appeal, however, which shows like Stranger Things have brought back to prominence. It’s been a great series so far, with Singing in the Rain, Cool Hand Luke, and Enter the Dragon sporting some very cool artwork. As before, Blade Runner is a five-ounce silver coin, and neatly presented.

THE AVENGERS 60TH ANNIVERSARY

Rooted firmly in the comic books rather than the movies, this series of seven wedge-shaped coins is a celebration of sixty years since the biggest team in comics had their debut – The Avengers. Each of the issues showcases one of the characters in their original 1960s form, and it’s good to them in this form after a decade of Hollywood stamping its vision on them.

Each of them tips the scales at a troy ounce of silver, and each comes boxed in individually themed packaging. However, buyers of the Captain America coin will get a free, circular collectors box which will hold all seven coins. No doubt this will be popular, and you can look forward to the last four issues over the next couple of months. Captain Marvel and Black Widow are next.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK ICON

New to the mint’s extensive media franchise portfolio is the legendary Indiana Jones, and the five movies that it consists of. Rather than the usual designs, one of the early releases is this superb icon, made famous in a scene from the first movie, and probably still the best one, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Struck in an ounce of silver, this shaped coin exhibits good levels of relief, and is fully gilded. As always at the NZ Mint, packaging is fully themed and well-designed. A super idea for the fan of the franchise, which, despite the last two movies, is well stocked.

COMIX: DETECTIVE COMICS #27

The latest in the comic book cover homage range, Comix is a legend in the collector market. Detective Comics #27 was the first appearance of perhaps the most iconic superhero of them all, Batman. We’ve seen this cover several times before, most notably in silver foil form, and its appearance in this series was almost inevitable.

These are well realised, however, with the comic book reproduction extending to the coin edges. The presentation is, again, first class. In a couple of days time, the mint will release Action Comics #1 (Superman debut), and Avengers #1 (first appearance of The Avengers).
