One of the staples of the numismatic world, not just in modern times, but throughout history, has been the female personification of a nation, or a myth, or a concept. Modern examples include Britannia, Liberty, Marianne, and Germania, amongst others, and they always seem to exude a classical feel. Joining them is a new medallion form PF Coins that eschews the nationalist focus for a mythical one.

Called ‘Phoenix Valkyrie’, the star here is a beautifully realised woman, in classical flowing robes, resplendent with outstretched wings, and hovering above flames. The imagery is inspired by, although not a direct part of, Norse mythology, with the Valkyries being the warrior women who carried those who died bravely in battle, to Valhalla. The Phoenix Valkyrie combines that Norse legend with the mythical, immortal Phoenix, a bird that reincarnates in fire. A terrific piece of art, it can stand alongside its contemporaries.

The obverse almost has a ‘completer’ coin feel to it, with a central area depicting a Viking-style hall representing Valhalla, surrounded by a runic border. The other side of the border features eight small elements with Norse ties, including Fenrir, Fafnir, Sleipnir, Jormungandr, and Odin’s two ravens. At the top sits an armed Valkyrie, gilded on the Golden Crown variant, which is one of the three differently finished versions in the range.

The commonest (1,000 pieces), and a favourite, is that Golden Crown, and has a silver finish with some gilded highlights. The Obsidian Flame variant (500) has a black platinum finish with considerably more extensive gilded highlights, and looks particularly striking. Rarest of them at 250 pieces, is the Cosmic Flame edition, and to call this one vibrant would be an understatement.
