Sovereign with Greek Privy Mark gold bullion coin (2025 Royal Mint & Piraeus Bank)

Sovereign with Greek Privy Mark gold bullion coin (2025 Royal Mint & Piraeus Bank)

I know the Sovereign has its hardcore collectors, and this one should have some appeal if you track one down.

PRESS RELEASE: The Royal Mint, the United Kingdom’s official maker of coins, and Piraeus Bank, Greece’s leading financial institution, announce the launch of a limited-edition Gold Sovereign featuring a discreet «ΕΛ» privy mark. Struck in 22-carat gold, the coin bears the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III alongside the timeless image of St George slaying the dragon.

The «ΕΛ» (for Ελλάδα, “Hellas”) marks the first time a Sovereign has been produced with a symbol dedicated to Greece. With a limited mintage of 15,000 pieces, this launch celebrates a 15-year collaboration between Piraeus Bank and The Royal Mint. Each coin will be available exclusively through Piraeus Bank’s nationwide network. It will be presented in bespoke co-branded packaging, designed for the occasion, combining the rich Greek heritage with the enduring prestige of the Sovereign.

The Sovereign has long held a special place in Greece, as both a trusted store of value and a cultural touchstone. For more than two decades, Piraeus Bank has played a leading role in Greece’s gold market, and for the past fifteen years it has partnered directly with The Royal Mint to continue making the Sovereign legacy available to Greek households – a relationship that has made Piraeus one of the most significant Sovereign distributors in Europe.

“The Sovereign is one of the world’s most respected bullion coins, valued for its precision, craftsmanship, and timeless design”, said Nick Bowkett, Global Head of Growth at The Royal Mint. “This special edition with the «ΕΛ» privy mark recognises Greece’s deep connection to the Sovereign and celebrates our close ties with Piraeus Bank”.

“This exclusive Sovereign is a testament to our enduring partnership with The Royal Mint – built on trust and shared values” said Athanasios Arvanitis, Head of Piraeus Financial Markets (PFM), Piraeus Bank. “The «ΕΛ» privy mark not only honours Greece’s cultural legacy but also demonstrates our joint dedication to delivering superior products to the investment-gold market. We are proud to offer this historic edition to our clients; the result of a landmark collaboration between two trusted institutions. The «ΕΛ» Sovereign is more than gold – it is history, culture and value, held in your hands”.
