Top World Coins adds a horny beast, and the most famous meal in history, as additions to its biblical and dinosaur coin series

Top World Coins have just launched a new pair of designs, both of which are additions to ongoing series. This producer, loosely associated with Mint XXI, has built up a fine reputation in a short space of time with some very nice issues, especially the Tribal Spirit coin, and of course, dinosaurs.

The first new design is a subject everybody knows we have a huge soft spot for – dinosaurs. The first issue in this series was a neat Tyrannosaurus Rex coin, and for this second release, it’s an animal that popular culture would have us believe was its nemesis – Triceratops, the three-horned herbivore often depicted in combat with the apex predator.

Living from 68-66 m.y.a., Triceratops was a populous animal living in herds, growing to around 9 m in length, and weighing as much as ten tons. The distinctive trio of horns, which gives the animal its name, were often seen as defensive, but are now considered more as a show for the ladies. Whatever the case, this is a very distinctive beast, and one of the most famous dinosaurs of them all.

The coin offers a very well realised depiction of the not-so-wee beastie, and its environment. The fern-like trees, possibly lycopods, in the background are a superb touch, and the scene seems very natural, eschewing the usual nonsensical dramatic posing. The common obverse from the T. Rex coin returns. A great release, we’ve yet to learn if a coloured special edition will come at a later date.

The second design is one of this producer’s long-running Bible Stories series, a popular source of inspiration in modern numismatics. TWC’s range is impressive enough, and this sixth issue, The Last Supper, is a fine example of the type. It’s great to see a more original interpretation of it, than just another pastiche of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous mural.

This is a more intimate portrayal, brought to life with a judicious use of high-relief. The close-ups of the thirteen figures are beautifully done, and it’s a more realistic scene than the usual one encumbered by over-the-top religious iconography. The scene is believable, although we doubt that a solitary loaf of bread is enough for sandwiches all round… Again, a series common obverse returns.

The Last Supper is unusual in that there are two variants on offer. The series as a whole has settled on two-ounces in weight, and that’s the case here, but in addition to that, there’s also a five-ounce version. From the images we have, it’s almost impossible to see any real differences between them, so buyers of the smaller coin aren’t missing out. The 10 mm increase in diameter is nice, but there’s an obvious cost penalty. Like the other pair of coins here, this one is boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity, and is available to order now.
