We’re off to the Moon with Numiscollect’s latest windowed silver numismatic

A perennial favourite for the past few years, meteorite coins come in many forms, often employing new cutting edge minting techniques. What they have in common however, is an embedded piece of one of the myriad meteorites that have crashed to Earth over the last few million years. In many cases, the rarity of the meteorite can have an impact on the price of the coin, but generally it’s the coins specification that determines where it’s placed in the market.

Numiscollect have unashamedly aimed at the higher end with this one, emplying multiple techniques on the three ounces of silver to raise it above the norm. The coin is convex on both sides rather than being a true dome which you can clearly see lower down in the image of the coin side. It isn’t a high-relief strike, not necessary given the coins subject, but the level of detail is certainly impressive, enhanced by the antique finish. There’s a new, subtle colouring technique in evidence as well, being integrated with, rather than laid on top of the antiquing.

Inset into the reverse face is a small square indent in which is placed the obligatory meteorite fragment. Pride of place with this coin, like last years Campo del Cielo coin, is the glass window in the coin centre. While last years coin contained a starscape, this years has gone with the lunar surface and it rounds out the design very well. Inscriptions are confined to the coins name and are not obtrusive. The obverse design is similar, but with a different moonscape. There’s no fragment, but the window is clearly visible and the required inscriptions neatly placed.

Presented in a good quality box with a certificate of authenticity, there will only be 333 of these minted. It’s a great looking coin with a popular subject. Certainly not a bargain basement coin, it would form a fine centrepiece to a meteorite coin collection. The coin will ship in late May/early June.

2017 METEORITE MOON SILVER COIN

MINTS DESCRIPTION

After the big succes of the 2016 edition Campo del Cielo the series continues with the Moon; Earth’s Satellite. Even more stunning with ultra high detailed relief minted in lens form. Just 333 pieces incl moon insert.

The Moon is an astronomical body that orbits planet Earth, being Earth’s only permanent natural satellite. The Moon is thought to have formed about 4.51 billion years ago, not long after Earth. There are several hypotheses for its origin; the most widely accepted explanation is that the Moon formed from the debris left over after a giant impact between Earth and a Mars-sized body called Theia.

This coin simply has it all: ultra high relief detailed as never before, color glass inlay, coloring, antique finish, moon meteorite insert.
