Avengers: Age of Ultron is the eleventh installment in the hugely popular Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Written and directed by Joss Whedon, the movie has star-studded ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and James Spader. It grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2015 and the sixth-highest-grossing film of all time.
The story is pretty standard stuff, villian wants to destroy the world but a band of heroes stands in its way, but it’s the rich history and characterisation of the main players that make movies in the MCU really stand out. Five of the biggest characters in this blockbuster movie have been singled out for inclusion in a new five-coin set of 1oz silver coins, a sequel to the four-coin set that came out last year, also from the US-based Sunshine Mint.
The set from last year included the four heroes that appear in 2015, but lacked the new addition of the main villain. The format of the coins, simple proof-finish coloured silver rounds, hasn’t changed, but the way the coins have been presented certainly has. Each of the four coins was available seperately in 2014, packaged in a custom tin, each of which could be placed into a larger, lunchbox-style metal tin to form a cool collection. This year, the coins are only available as a complete set, but come with the added bonus of a Certificate of Authenticity incorporating fabric from costumes used in the movie. Four are available, Hulk, Thor, Iron-Man and one that seems to be less widely available, Captain America. A nice touch, slightly reminiscent of the excellent Bag End Hobbit coin that incorporated a piece of movie memorabilia directly onto the coin surface.
Selling for around US$400, the set is available now from several dealers, also mainly based on the North American continent, but we don’t doubt that European and Australasian dealers will pick this one up as well. Two sequels, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2, are scheduled to be released on May 4, 2018, and May 3, 2019, respectively, so maybe we haven’t seen the last of Sunshine Mints Avengers coins.
We’ve also bagged a discount code from The Coin Shoppe in Canada that despite already being one of the cheapest places to buy the set, has offered our readers another 7% off with the rather cool AGAUVENGERS7 code to be entered at checkout.
