Tower Mint celebrates the freedom and spirit of the people of the Falkland Islands, with a new gold & silver coin range

Few producers do the classic numismatic tropes as well as Tower Mint can, and their latest new addition, the first in a new annual series, is a great example of that. Called ‘Liberty’, it will look at various examples of that concept, and how it’s brought to life in different works, especially by places that have fought for the principles of freedom and self-determination. This is a core theme of many coins, and has been for centuries.

The first issue depicts the Liberation Memorial, which was erected in Stanley, Falkland Islands, in remembrance of the British forces that served in the 1982 liberation of the islands from the Argentinian invasion. It sits in front of the Secretariat Building in Stanley Harbour, and it was funded completely by the islanders themselves, being erected in 1984. It consists of a bronze statue of Britannia, sitting atop an obelisk, on which are inscribed the units, squadrons and ships that took part in the operation. The wall behind the memorial is inscribed with the names of the fallen on plaques, and has relief scenes from the war.

The coin depicts the Britannia from the memorial as if the viewer were looking up at it, which would be the case in reality. Arcing around the border for around half its length, is a string of Pale Maidens, the national flower of the Falkland Islands, and one that looks a little like the iconic poppy. The word ‘LIBERTY’ is inscribed at the top, and ‘DESIRE THE RIGHT’, the island’s motto, to the left, both parallel to the coin’s edge. The obverse is the effigy of King Charles III.

This will be a gold and silver range, but we only have details on the gold at present. The silver image below is not an official one, but one I did to give you an idea of the look (it’s just a desaturated gold image), so bear that in mind. For gold, there are proof finish coins in one-ounce, and tenth-ounce weights, and for bullion, there’s also a one-ounce coin, but also a half-gram minigold, which is a particularly nice addition in these days of golds inflated spot price. The proof coins are boxed with a certificate. A great start to a series that collectors of the classic themes will warm to, especially with the low mintages. Available any time now.
