Korean producer, Today, adds a new stackable with an unusual quirk, and expands two coin series with new issues
As we recover from the bug, and simultaneously start to chip away at a huge backlog from the World Money Fair, we’re going to rely on this format to do the heavy lifting. We’ll be sacrificing some opinion and description, letting the imagery do most of the work, so at least you’ll see much of what comes out, rather than us missing it. Kicking it off is a quick catch-up of the Korean producer, Today, and their latest releases, a mix of bullion and numismatics.
We have three of them here, with a new stackable no doubt the one to garner most interest. Called ‘Kings of Pirates’, it takes four distinct groups of pirates, and circumnavigates them around a central magnetic compass. Each of the four types is represented by a famous member, from Blackbeard to Henry Morgan, and with the famous skull-and-crossbones themed to suit.
There are lashings of high-relief, and lots of little pirate themed imagery scattered around. The dark antique finish looks spot-on, and it remains fully stackable. It’s a bit quirkier than Today’s usual stackables, and less outright bullion, but the end result does look very cool. We’ll amend the spec table at the bottom with dimensions and a mintage when we get the information. NOW DONE.
The first of the coin additions is actually the third in the ‘To Protect’ series, looking at famous military helmets from history. The first issue was a 16th century Burgonet cavalry helmet, followed last year by a very neat Japanese helmet from the 17th century, that the Asian country had based around a European type. For 2024, we have the legendary winged helmet, worn by the Polish Hussars.
It’s the same two-ounce silver format, with high-relief, and selective gilding. The background is a battle scene, and the obverse has a unique to each release patterned design. An attractive range, sporting unusual historical subjects, they come boxed in a display frame, with an enclosed Certificate of Authenticity.
Finally, we have the follow-on coin to the Tyrannosaurus Rex release from early 2022. This one takes a bit of explaining. There are a pair of two-ounce coins in the set, which share a common obverse (the footprint design below). The two coins have a different reverse face, and those are what makes this stackable. They are not infinitely so, like the bullion range, but only stackable as a pair, with one depicting the fossilised skull, and the other a look at the living creature.
As we said, this is only available as a set with both coins in, and it’s fully denominated for the Republic of Chad. The relatively tiny mintage of 250 sets puts any pretence at being bullion firmly to bed. Something a bit different in what is one of the most packed genres in modern coins.
