Great Greek Mythology, the epic 36-coin series by Mint XXI, concludes with the launch of the final three coins

The day has come when another great series has journeyed to completion, and this time it’s the epic 36-coin ‘Great Greek Mythology’ by Mint XXI. We’ve followed this series since its debut back in September 2022, and it’s been a pleasure to see it grow into a fine collation of the major characters in this influential ancient belief system, as mad as it is sometimes (a dog with 3 heads and 1 butt? How would that work?)

The series is unusual in that it’s a mix of three different coin sizes. There are 12 one-ounce coins, 16 two-ounce coins, and 8 three-ounce coins, with the latter predominantly the major gods, and the others a mix of gods, heroes, and villains of this mythology. All are boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity, and there’s a clever display box system that holds the entire set, if you’re fortunate enough to have it.

For this twelfth and final tranche of three coins, there’s a solitary one-ounce, and a pair of two-ounce coins. The most high-profile of them will undoubtedly be Hades, the god of the underworld, and his depiction here isn’t one of inspiring terror, but more one of ancient wisdom and duty. Persephone is shown confined in his robe. Next comes Hecate, a beautiful design, features the goddess of witchcraft in traditional form, accompanied by a terrific portrait of a dog. Finally, there’s the mortal, Icarus, famous for flying too close to the sun, and the byword for overreach.

All are antique finished, with a gilded element, and replete with high relief.
