Live Long and Prosper. The iconic Vulcan salute from Star Trek heads up the latest selection of releases from Agoro

We haven’t caught up with Agoro, the collectible department of the New Zealand Mint, for a while, but we’ve noticed they seem to be getting a bit more adventurous of late, and we love that here. This producer is almost exclusively focused on pop culture franchises, like Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter, DC Comics, and Star Trek, and some of them are represented in this round-up.

Of the five, four are issues in ongoing series, with the Vulcan hand coin being one of those rare one-offs that we wish were more popular. Not every collector wants, or can afford, regular outlays for coins, and the humble one-off is attractive in that regard. Agoro is quite prolific, so this selection just scratches the surface of the last few weeks, so check out their site to see what other franchises might take your fancy.

2025 STAR TREK LIVE LONG & PROSPER SALUTE

Some can do it, some can’t but all Star Trek fans have had a go at doing the Vulcan salute. Meant to signify the concept of IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations), an appreciation for which seems to be going the way of the dodo, it was used by Leonard Nimoy back in the original sixty’s series, and has been a part of the lore ever since.

The coin is a more affordable one ounce in weight, and is shaped just like a hand in salute. The obverse carries the famous inscription, “Live Long and Prosper”, along with an image of Nimoy’s Spock doing the salute. It’s great to see Agoro thinking out of the box more, rather than issuing the same basic design over and over. A neat one for the fan.

STAR WARS BLUEPRINTS 04: 2025 TIE FIGHTER

After the Death Star, the Millennium Falcon, Vader’s helmet, Luke’s Lightsaber, and the X-Wing, the sixth in the Star Wars Blueprints range of one ounce silver foils is another absolute classic of that universe – the TIE Fighter. Agoro are fortunate that Star Wars has so many popular, and easily recognisable, subjects for this series.

These are big silver foils, far more suitable for the fine detailing of a blueprint than the original 2017 coin series ever was, and would make a great display item. The common obverse has a pattern upon it, along with inscriptions denoting the composition, and the issue details.

2025 STAR TREK KLINGON BIRD OF PREY

The vessel-shaped Star Trek Ships series gets its third release, and this time it’s probably the most loved ship in the franchise outside the original USS Enterprise – the Klingon Bird of Prey. This mainstay of Starfleets biggest enemy, this ship has starred in so many of the films and television shows, that it’s hard to keep track, so its inclusion in this range is of little surprise.

These are bigger than most, tipping the scales at three ounces, but the end result is something pretty large, at almost 4″ across. They’re not particularly three-dimensional, but they sport enough relief to make a good job of the reproduction. I like this one more than USS Voyager, and USS Defiant, but the ship was always one of the better designs in Trek history. A little pricey at $345 USD, it remains aa cool piece for fans of one of the most popular franchises ever.

AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER: 2025 SOKKA CHIBI

Avatar: The Last Airbender, with its Asian art style and story, is an American, animated series telling the story of 12-year-old Aang. In this world, the Avatar is someone that can telekinetically manipulate all four of the elements – air, fire, water, earth – and bring balance to the four groups. It’s much loved, and Netflix spent a lot on a live action remake last year, that was also highly regarded.

Anybody that’s been to this site before will likely know what a Chibi coin is, as there have been scores of them issued by Agoro and the New Zealand Mint over the last few years, and while they went on hiatus for a year or so, they’re back. Avatar has been the main beneficiary so far, if you exclude Major League Baseball, and Sokka is the third in the series to date. It will be available to buy from 17 September, and 16 October will see the fourth Chibi, Toph, debut.

2025 HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX BOOK

Another sign that Agoro are spreading their wings a little more was the launch of a new Harry Potter series that wasn’t another rehashed poster. This excellent series utilises the US book covers painted by the artist, Mary GrandPré, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, is the fifth to be issued so far.

Another fine piece of art, albeit cropped from the full-sized original, this is shaping up to be an attractive change from the usual film posters. A two-ounce coin, it employs that rectangular format Agoro loves so much, and is nicely packaged.
