The goddess Hera, and the fruits of her labour, are the subject of T&S Coins latest crystal-enhanced silver coin
T & S Coin have issued their second silver coin of the year, following an eye-catching pirate issue in late January, and this time, we’re back in the ever-popular world of Greek mythology. Hera is the goddess of women, marriage and family, and the queen of the most important gods, the Twelve Olympians. She was the wife, and sister, of Zeus, and the daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. She was said to be the epitome of the vengeful woman, dealing with many of Zeus’s dalliances in a harsh way.
The design of the coin reflects her association with family and childbirth, and she is depicted holding a coloured pomegranate, a symbol of fertility because of its huge number of seeds. She is giving it to a couple, with the woman pregnant, both dressed in Greek-style robes. The Peacock is a sacred animal associated with her, and it forms an extravagant backdrop to the foreground scene. The bird’s body is gilded, and the outstretched display is coloured in that intense way the real bird is.
On each of the feathers is embedded a clear crystal, over twenty of them in total. We’re normally a bit ambivalent about the crystals, as we know many of you are, but they do seem to work here, their use quite clever in execution. The one around Hera’s neck is a nice addition, and the location of her gilded highlights well chosen. The attractive, revised for 2025 common obverse, returns. As always, the coin comes boxed with a COA, A well realised, and unique take on a perennial favourite theme.
