A round up of the latest in movie and television coins – Minions, Back to the Future, DC Comics, & more
A bit late with this onje today, we thought a quick round-up of the three or four new movie coins wouldn’t take too long to get together, but the list continued to grow to eight before we drew it to a close. Anyway, here it is and there’s a mix of coins and foils, all silver, a covering a range of different movie properties.
Obviously, our favourite is Bob, but no doubt those who are more mature in mind that me, may well like one of the others more. All are available to order now, some of them from stock. There’s a lot more coming in the coming months, including more competition for the NZ Mint’s ‘Chibi’ coin range.
We’ve seen the first one of these, Stuart, in hand and if you’re a Minion fan (who isn’t!!) you’ll love them,. They come nicely presented and have a mintage of just 1,000 pieces – quite low for the genre. There’s more to come as well…

This one follows the earlier release of a Superman Shield emblem shaped coin. While not as well known as that character, The Flash is popular enough to warrant a release like this. The presentation, as you’d expect from this producer, is first class.

The third and fourth in the ‘Japanese ‘Super-Deformed’ style of shaped coin for the Back to the Future franchise, this one has the antagonist, Biff Tannen, and the girlfriend of Marty McFly, Jennifer Parker. Each comes in at an ounce in weight.

Like the DC Comics character emblem coins, this Hogwarts Crest issue is shaped like the subject and partly coloured on the reverse face. We reckon this will be followed by similar coins for each of the main houses given the mint has already done something similar with a set of silver foils a couple of years ago. We really liked those..This one is beautifully presented, as always.

A return to market for the silver foil format that looked destined for big things just a couple of years ago. Coin Club Australia have a pair of these on offer, both for the Back to the Future franchise. This is our favourite of the pair, depicting a blueprint of Doc Brown’s time-travelling De Lorean sports car (although calling one of those a sports car is like calling a motobike a limousine…). It’s a neat use of the huge foil format. Frustratingly, they’ve not given us a size, but foils of the same weight from the NZ Mint come in at a capacious 175 x 260 mm.

A simple piece, this is an almost fully coloured scene from the Disney animated movie classic, Alice in Wonderland. The art style is distinctly different from the original look used by the Royal Mint earlier this week, so you’ll either prefer one or the other. No complaints about the choice of scene or the presentation.

The second of the Back to the Future foil pair, this one is a cool homage to the two central characters in an almost animated style of art. As far as specification goes, it’s the same as the blueprint foil, except in a portrait format.

An offbeat series looking at the many types of vehicle that DC Comics legend ‘Batman’ has owned over his decades long lifespan. This is the third and depicts the car from the awful movie, Batman & Robin, a film so bad it killed the franchise for a decade. While the NZ Mint has done some fine DC Comics coins, this series isn’t one of them, in our view. The layout is cluttered and awkward with too many elements competing for space over the car.
