2020 Panda bullion and commemorative coins debut in silver and gold

Kicking around since its debut way back in 1982, the Chinese Panda coin has become a staple of the bullion world in particular, and the annually changing design is always eagerly awaited – reflected in mintages that have risen inexorably over the last decade. As we’re just a couple of weeks away from the Beijing International Coin Exposition, the Bank of China has debuted the 2020 design.

For the 2019 design, the Bank of China started a ten-year design programme that is to tell the story of a Panda. Last years ‘Mother and Child’ depiction has given way to a single juvenile animal as if to suggest the passage of time. It’s quite a subtle thing and is meant to take place over ten years. The 2020 design is pretty nice and will please the faithful, but do little to convert those not enamoured of previous issues.

The same selection of formats as usual. Gold bullion versions come in 1g, 3g, 8g, 15g and 30g weights. Gold proof in 50g, 100g, 150g and 1000g (1kg) weights. The silver bullion coin is available in the 30g size only, with 150g and 1kg weights being struck only in the limited proof format. Mintages are the same as last year, with the exception of the gold proof variants, all of which have seen rises in numbers.

Struck by the Shenzhen Guobao Mint, the Shenyang Mint, and the Shanghai Mint, the bullion coins should be available from the end of November, with the proof following shortly after. They can be pre-ordered at plenty of places, of course, includingmany of our sponsors, so check out the bullion coin tab on our WHERE TO BUY page.
