Scottsdale Mint expands the 2017 Congo Silverback Gorilla range with a kilo coin and a coloured ounce

For all of the various bullion coins issued by Scottsdale Mint over the last couple of years (Marlins, Leopards, Scorpions and Japanese art), the main core of their efforts has been the Silverback Gorilla range issued for the African state, the Republic of Congo. The third annual coin was launched back in early July and is now widely available for sale.

Previous issues have seen the release of a coloured proof version of the coin for collectors of commemoratives and today sees the release of that one. What wasn’t expected however, was the launch a a kilo version of the bullion variant. Expected to be a new annual issue going forward, this is a welcome addition to the relatively limited selection of silver bullion coins in this weight.

The coloured one-ounce coin will have a mintage of 2,500 pieces and comes boxed with a certificate of authenticity. The design is exactly the same as the bullion coin with the exception of the gorilla, which is coloured. It’s a good-looking design that works well with the colour, something not always the case. Packaging looks decent and it should be shipping from the last week of September.

Of particular interest to stackers will be the new kilogram-sized bullion version. Again, there are no changes to the basic design outside of composition and denomination inscriptions, much like Perth Mint kilo coins, but it’s a fine looking coin and a great alternative to the usual choices. Supplied in a capsule, this one will be priced as a bullion coin and we believe it’ll be competitive with the rest of the market. Mintage is capped at 5,000 units and it should be available right about now.
