Warrior of History silver coin series mounts horseback with the Mongol Hordes

The latest in what we think is the New Zealand Mint’s best non-licenced coin series at the moment, Warriors of History debuts today and is the eighth to do so since it kicked off last year. Featuring some of the warrior classes from around the world and throughout time that have greatly impacted either their region, or the world as a whole. Each of them is one-ounce of fine 0.999 silver in weight with a prett

The latest coin depicts a group that definitely impacted the world far outside of their home territory, the Mongols. The coin design doesn’t stray from the popular format used previously. A solitary warrior, brightly coloured and holding a weapon is set to one side of the reverse face and is the only element to be picked out in this way. The rest of this face is dedicated to a scene of the warriors in combat, in this case a group of mounted Mongols charging into battle. Just the coin title is inscribed on this face, along with the composition in a tiny font, and the whole face has an antique finish.

The obverse is also antiqued and as we’re sure you’d expect by now from this mint, depicts the Ian Rank Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by the usual inscriptions. We love the packaging of this series as well, a small book-like box that is very neat, attractive and of a good quality. We wish more would use this style instead of some of the huge and hard to store efforts some others do. A certificate of authenticity is enclosed.

The coin sells for $85.00 USD and has a mintage of 5,000 pieces. It’s the latest in what has grown into a popular and very well realised series of coins. We know that at least one more coin is coming later this summer and heads back to the African continent. A companion series called Battles That Changed History also debuted last month with a Battle of Yorktown coin. You can see more about this fine series in our Coin Series Profile that we constantly keep updated.

2017 WARRIORS OF HISTORY: MONGOLS SILVER COIN

THE MONGOL EMPIRE

The Mongol Empire  existed during the 13th and 14th centuries and was the largest contiguous land empire in history. Originating in the steppes of Central Asia, the Mongol Empire eventually stretched from Central Europe to the Sea of Japan, extending northwards into Siberia, eastwards and southwards into the Indian subcontinent, Indochina, and the Iranian plateau, and westwards as far as the Levant and Arabia.

The Mongol Empire emerged from the unification of nomadic tribes in the Mongol homeland under the leadership of Genghis Khan, whom a council proclaimed ruler of all the Mongols in 1206. The empire grew rapidly under his rule and that of his descendants, who sent invasions in every direction. The vast transcontinental empire connected the east with the west with an enforced Pax Mongolica, allowing the dissemination and exchange of trade, technologies, commodities, and ideologies across Eurasia.

From the age of 15, Mongols became warriors, training to fight in formations and using tactics proven in battle over time. The backbone of the Mongol army were its mounted archers. Widely considered to be amongst the finest archers of all time, they used a composite bow, one made from multiple materials to form a single piece with greatly enhanced characteristics. Warriors were trained to fire in unison so that the sky would literally rain with arrows and cause fear and panic intheir enemies. As well as the bow, Mongol warriors were also proficient with a sabre or a spear.
