WMF20: Numiscollect rekindle our childhoods with their first ‘Famous Fables’ coin, The Golden Goose

Numiscollect never disappoint when it comes to their selection for the major fairs and the new issues for Berlin are as impressive as ever. Employing smartminting and some great subjects, they’ve delivered yet again. The first we’re looking at is the debut of their Famous Fables series.

Bringing to life some of the tales many of us grew up with as children, the series is starting out with the story of The Golden Goose’. As you can see from the images, it’s a beautifully detailed and designed piece of work, antique finished, and making full use of the smartminting process.

Struck in 2oz of fine silver and issued for Palau, just 333 of these will be issued. It will of course, come boxed with a certificate. A little briefer than usual, as we’re currently at the fair, but these images should tell you all you need to know. An other fine choice of subject, finely realised. Availability to be confirmed, but we’d expect it in a few months time.

MINTS DESCRIPTION

First issue in Fables series. Who doesn’t know the story of the farmer and the goose that laid golden eggs. Be greedy and have nothing! One of the famous Aesop’s Fables now on a coin. Unique smartminting perspective, 2oz on 45mm blanks with partial gilding.

“The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs” is one of Aesop’s Fables, numbered 87 in the Perry Index, a story that also has a number of Eastern analogues. Many other stories contain geese that lay golden eggs, though certain versions change them for hens or other birds that lay golden eggs. The tale has given rise to the idiom ‘killing the goose that lays the golden eggs’, which refers to the short-sighted destruction of a valuable resource, or to an unprofitable action motivated by greed.
