After the movie posters come the comics. Star Wars Comics #1 hits premium silver foils

FOILPACKAGING

A new series of the New Zealand Mints premium foils hits today and combines their Star Wars and comic book cover ranges to feature landmark Star Wars comic books. The first to be issued depicts the first Star Wars comic to be published – Star Wars Comics #1 (surprise, surprise!). If you’re familiar with some of the NZ Mints earlier releases, there will be no surprises here.

The same 175 x 262 mm silver canvas is coloured and engraved with the cover art from issue #1 and it’s packaged in an acrylic frame that makes display easy. The mintage is set at 10,000 pieces and it sells for $130 USD. Our take – I’m not a fan. The comics are hardly classics and with the Star Wars Expanded Universe carrying so much impressive artwork, we’d have focused our attention there instead. Some of the novels, (Timothy Zahn’s Thrawn books, for example), have some outstanding art on them that would look great at this size, or maybe even reproducing animation cells from the well-regarded Star Wars animated series is another option. Anyway, these are available now.

REVERSE: features a replica of the Star Wars #1 cover from April 1977, commemorating the first issue of the Star Wars series of comic books. The replica design is based on Howard Chaykin’s original Star Wars convention poster, which became one of the most valuable posters in the Star Wars collecting world.

OBVERSE: This features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Country of Issue – Niue.
