It goes without saying that we’ve only just begun to weather the storm of lunar coins to be issued and Perth is adding to the cacophony with three more coins.

There isn’t much to say that hasn’t been said many times before regarding the standard lunar design and two of the three coins are variants of that. The last is one similar to the two-coin Lunar Good Fortune set released last month.

2015 1/20oz GOLD LUNAR

Reputedly the oldest chronological record in history, the ancient Chinese Lunar Calendar dates back before 2,600BC. Based on the appearance of the new moon, it associates a different animal with each year in the 12-year lunar cycle.

Traditionally, the first year of the lunar cycle is ruled by the mouse. According to legend, the order of the animals in Chinese astrology was determined by their race across a river. Each animal is believed to influence the personality of the people born under its rule.

DESIGN: The coloured reverse of the coin depicts an adult male goat standing on a ridge in a stylised mountain scene.  The Chinese character for ‘goat’, and the inscription ‘Year of the Goat’ also appears in the design. Designed by Natasha Muhl.

PACKAGING: The Year of the Horse 1/20oz Gold Coloured Coin is the latest release to add to this prestigious Twelve-Coin Collection.This coin will be presented in a capsule and is accompanied with a Certificate of Authenticity.

2015 5oz SILVER PROOF LUNAR

Struck by The Perth Mint from 5oz of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

DESIGN: The reverse of the coin depicts a family of three goats standing in a stylised rural scene. The Chinese character for ‘goat’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Goat’ also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. Designed by Natasha Muhl.

2015 LUNAR GOAT: WEALTH

Celebrating the Year of the Goat and the ideal of good fortune, this stunning 1oz silver proof coin is released to encourage wealth. This coin is a prestigious and exceptionally limited offering from The Perth Mint.

In ancient Greek and Roman mythology, the cornucopia or the ‘horn of plenty’ is symbolic of fertility, prosperity, fortune and abundance. The horn-shaped container, similar to a shell, is often depicted overflowing with produce, flowers, nuts, gold and other treasures.

DESIGN: The coin’s reverse depicts a coloured representation of a goat standing in an enormous pile of gold coins and other riches. The gold has spilled forth out of a cornucopia, signifying bounty and wealth. The inscriptions WEALTH and 2015 YEAR OF THE GOAT also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark. Designed by Tom Vaughan.
