The heroic work of firefighter’s around the globe is showcased on a new shaped silver coin from Fiji

One of the primary emergency services, the Fire Brigade is something we hope never to see, but will owe everything to when it’s needed. Tasked with the control and extinguishing of fires, and the saving of those put in danger by them, the fire service is one you can never be too grateful for. They’re involved in fire cause investigation, and fire prevention as well. It’s a tough job, filled with stress (PTSD isn’t uncommon), physical danger, and emotional issues, and one of the most dangerous professions there is.

CIT have already issued a firefighter coin as part of its ‘Real Heroes’ series, but this latest issue from Coin Today, is very different from that. This is a three-ounce, shaped silver coin, packed with detail over both faces. The reverse face focuses on the emotional aspect of the job, showing us a child safely ensconced in the arms of her rescuing firefighter, while flames and billowing smoke surround them. It’s a great summation of just what this service means to our society – a safety net, reliable and heroic.

The obverse is superb, showing us a torso covered with all the different types of equipment designed to keep them safe, while they’re performing their duty. It’s beautifully done, right down to the folds in the fabric. Even the Fijian emblem and issue details are nicely integrated into the design. Clearly, a lot of time and effort has been expended on this face, and it’s the more impressive of the two.

This isn’t one of Coin’s Today’s unlimited mintage bullion stackers, but a limited mintage coin, and as such, comes neatly boxed in themed packaging, and with a Certificate of Authenticity. That mintage is capped at 333 pieces, which seems pretty reasonable given the universal appeal of the subject. The antique-finish looks great, and we’re pleased the producer has resisted the urge to splash colour all over it – it isn’t needed, in our view. An unexpected and unusual issue, it continues a fine run of releases from the Korean producer. Available to order now.

CORRECTION – Mintage is 333 pieces, not 999
