The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse join forces for a final five-ounce outing in Niue’s outstanding coin series

One of our favourites from the copious selection of mythology-themed coins struck by the Mint of Poland, the ‘Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse’ series, from Coin Shoppe and Pela Coins, finished its run of four, two-ounce coins last year. However, like we saw with Powercoin’s Eternal Sculptures, and MDM’s Norse Gods, they’ve issued a swansong coin, that ups the size and encapsulates all that has gone before.

Each of the four initial coins highlighted one of the Four Horsemen, and did so beautifully, especially the last two designs featuring the Black and Pale Horsemen, but the four legendary figures were always meant to come together to bring about the final apocalypse. That is exactly what the designers have done. Here, the mounted figures gallop into the open, weapons in hand, ready to end us all (it must be the 2020’s…).

Selective gilding returns, a series signature, even down to the red gold head armour on the Red Horsemen’s steed. The obverse, is very similar to that on the smaller coins, which is a distinct plus point, so check out the link above for a look at that, as well as more background on the series as a whole. All told, a fine way to round up a first class set of coins.

This five-ounce finale should be available to order sometime over the next week or two, and is scheduled to ship from around late May, Four Horseman has been a textbook example of what to do right with a series in this genre. It defined early on what the scope of the set would be, and has fulfilled that promise perfectly, while keeping up a sky-high level of quality. It’s been a terrific contrast to so many of these series that, despite the same level of quality, just fade away, leaving collectors disappointed. Kudos.
