Striking Achilles Shield bullion stacker is back, and it’s grown to a kilo in size

Launching in July, Coins Today released what is easily one of the prettiest bullion coins of recent years – Achilles Shield. A stackable round (one that has an imprint of the reverse design on the obverse, so they can lock together), it was also domed, and weighed two ounces. Now it returns, and it tips the scales at sixteen times the weight.

We’ve already covered the 2 oz issue, so check that out for fuller details, but this is fundamentally similar, with one major difference. On the original release, we saw that the design was based on the 1820 interpretation of the shield by Neoclassical Italian
painter, Angelo Monticelli. We also noted that the outer ring of art was missing, no doubt due to the size of it and the difficulty of reproducing it to a visible standard on a 50 mm canvas.

For the kilo variant, that ring is back, and Monticelli’s artwork is now struck on the round in full. We loved the original one on release, and having had one in hand, it fully lived up to expectations. We can’t imagine this beast being any different. An outstanding release and one of the best bullion rounds available today.
