The Star Trek onrush continues with a new three silver coin Canadian series of iconic Starships

It seems 2018 is going to be the year of the popular culture coin, with a huge range of tv and movie themed issues already appearing just five weeks into the year. Star Trek seems to be garnering a bit more attention than usual with THREE mints now issuing coins, since the New Zealand Mint joined the party last month with its Original Series coin-notes. The Perth Mint was the first to use the licence, quickly followed by the Royal Canadian Mint and it’s the latter that we’re featuring here.

Like most popular culture coins, these are relatively unambitious, but quite colourful – a format that seems to appeal to the memorabilia market more than the classic numismatic one. This series of three coins is adorned with images of the starships from three of the series – Voyager, Next Generation and Enterprise. The Enterprise-D from the Next Generation is the first to be launched, with Voyager coming in March and Enterprise NX-01 in April. We can’t argue about the designs, each being attractive renditions with a glow-in-the-dark that looks very effective (run your pointer over the coin image below to see it in action).

The obverse is a simple effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Sussana Blunt. Each proof finish coin is a half-ounce of 0.9999 silver in weight and comes presented in a heavily themed box that matches the coin design of each issue. Mintage is set at 10,000 units per coin and they sell for $64.95 CAD. While we don’t know if there will be any more of these, it is worth noting that there are three more Trek series (Original, Deep Space 9 and Discovery), so the potential for a second series does exist.

MINTS DESCRIPTION

Whether exploring new worlds or encountering unusual phenomena (including an occasional temporal rift), Star Trek‘s iconic starships have transported millions of imaginations deep into the final frontier.

REVERSE: A sci-fi and pop culture icon, U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D is brought to life by a vibrant colour application on the first coin in your subscription. The Galaxy-class vessel is set against a vivid green nebula, which adds a dynamic sense of movement and energy to the deep space setting. A frontal view allows for the study of the underside of the ship’s saucer and the stardrive section, whose navigational deflector is easily identified by the red concentric circles.

OBVERSE: The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

PACKAGING: Each of your coins are encapsulated and arrive presented in individual premium graphic boxes.
