The American Silver Eagle has been out for over 27 years now and as that’s past the 25 year limit on any redesign of the coin, a redesign is now being speculated. Rather than spend money getting all new designs to replace the Heraldic Eagle on the reverse, 44 designs were picked from those rejected for use in prior coin and medal programs and from those, 16 were put forward to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) for comment and recommendation.
Bear in mind that just because a design was rejected for a prior programme, it doesn’t mean it’s poor artwork. It may have simply have been rejected because it didn’t fit well enough with the subject matter on that particular coin.
In this case the chosen design was originally submitted as an option for the 2015 United States Marshals Service gold coin, but not picked by either the CCAC or the Committee of Fine Arts (CFA).
Bear in mind that this is very early days and all a bit speculative but I thought I’d mock up a quick image of what the coin might look like. Just a bit of fun so don’t take it too serious as any design won’t look exactly like this.
