Silver foil coins are back in style with a 12-piece Zodiac Series from eDonnaDesign inspired by Czech artist, Alphonse Mucha
It was only a few years ago that we started to see a big uptick in the number of silver foils being released, and almost as suddenly, they tapered off. We have a collection of Foil Series Profiles which look at many of them, including favourites, like the Batman Villains, the Harry Potter Hogwarts Houses, and Skyline Dollars. CIT still issue the occasional one as part of their lunar collection, as does MDM and the New Zealand Mint, but they’re a rarer sight these days. We think that’s a shame, as some of them have been quite superb.
New to the scene is a range by a company distributed by Mint of MK, a producer that has impressed us greatly since we started covering their coins in the second half of 2023. Called eDonnaDesign, this isn’t their first collection of foils, simply the first one we’ve looked at. These are a bit thicker than previous types, coming in at half-ounce, with a size around 100 x 73 mm. For comparison, earlier examples were a bit bigger (150 x 70 mm), yet tipped the scales at less than one-third of that. The end result is substantial enough to be self-supporting, not requiring sealing in soft acrylic, and thus come in better frames for easier display. A bit more than a foil, perhaps.
The theme of these twelve foil coins is the zodiac, and there are one for each symbol. I won’t waste your time describing it, as those that are interested will already know, but each has a traditional symbol at its core. What isn’t traditional is the inspiration for the glorious art employed. The common obverse is the work of Czech Art Nouveau painter, Alphonse Mucha, and was produced for La Plume in 1896, where it attracted much commercial success. The twelve reverse designs are inspired by his style.
These are straight up beautiful pieces. Highlights for me are Aquarius, Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio, Taurus (me), and Virgo, but I wouldn’t grumble if yours were the other six, as they’re that good. Each is richly coloured in an almost vintage style, enhanced by the size of the coin. Very impressed with these, and I can imagine these being attractive gifts for people that don’t collect coins.
Gemini: The duality of Gemini is beautifully depicted through the graceful profiles of twin figures, their flowing hair intertwined with vibrant flowers. The symmetry and harmony of this piece evoke the balanced nature of Gemini, symbolizing the sign’s intellectual curiosity and social adaptability.
The obverse, which you can see below, is a common design to this series, and again, relies on the artistic excellence of Alphonse Mucha. His trademark elegant woman is present, dresses in extravagantly adorned clothing. Behind her is a ring containing small images representing the zodiac symbols, and that in turn is framed by some pretty Art Nouveau flourishes and astrological iconography.
Each coin is beautifully presented. They’re placed in a solid acrylic block frame, which will make display a doddle, and they come in individually themed shippers, with matching serialised Certificates of Authenticity. Just 999 of each design will be produced, which is quite low given the low cost of these, and the popular subject. All told, a very impressive collection of foils, and one that is considerably more affordable than Mint of MK’s flagship five-ounce, ultra-limited range. These should be available to order now.
