Russia celebrates the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students with a coloured silver coin

Organised by a UN recognised group called the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), the World Festival of Youth and Students is an irregularly held event meant to embrace global youth solidarity for democracy and a rejection of war and imperialism. Last held in Quito, Ecuador, on 7-13 December 2013, the next festival will be held in Sochi, Russia on 13-22 October 2017 and is expected to bring together at least 20,000 of young people from 150 countries, hence the issue of this new Russian coin.

Struck in an ounce of sterling (0.925) silver by the Moscow Mint, the coin is a relatively rare Russian example of one with such extensive colouring. A simple affair, it depicts the logo of the event, which looks pretty good fortunately. The obverse is a standard Russian one, but as they contains the gorgeous double-headed eagle emblem, we’re certainly not complaining. Available to buy now with amintage capped at 3,000 units.

OBVERSE: on the mirror field of the disc the relief image of the National Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation, over it along the rim the semicircular inscription “РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ” (RUSSIAN FEDERATION), framed on both sides by doubled rhombuses, below under the coat of arms: to the left indications of the precious metal and its fineness, to the right the fine metal content and the mint trade mark, at the bottom in the centre in three lines the inscription “БАНК РОССИИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA), the denomination of the coin “3 РУБЛЯ” (3 RUBLES), the year of issue “2017 г.” (2017).

REVERSE: on the mirror field of the disc the colour image of the official logo of the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students 2017.
