For the fourth year in a row, the Royal Canadian Mint have debuted their latest Superman coins, and for the first time they’re doing it specifically for a movie. In the past there’s been a mix of comic art and covers from across this iconic Superheroes vast library of work, but with the release of the new blockbuster movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. From the title you’d think it was nothing more than a bash-em-up between two of the entire comic worlds longest-running, and most popular charcters, but that’s s apparently just a small part of the movie. They’ll be bashing up of others as well (nobody claimed it was written by Shakespeare….).

Even though it’s yet to be released, there’s been some superb imagery released in association with it, so making a range of coins for the movie must have seemed a no-brainer. There are six main releases. The first is a new 300,000 mintage $20 for $20 coin, the second to feature Superman, which does indeed look very well done, a nice dynamic fight scene between the two leads. Mounted to a card as usual, these are popular and good value.

Next up is something we rarely cover here, a cupronickel coin. Featuring a lenticular image on the reverse face that when tilted changes between Batman and Superman, it’s a technique the RCM has used many times before and it works well here. If  you run your mouse over our image below you can see the transformation. At $30 and including a pair of trading cards (one random from three), this will be a popular package we think.

There are two seperate coins depicting not just the two main characters, but also the debut of Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot. The 12,500 mintage, $110, 1oz silver coin carries classic representations of the characters, the 7,000 mintage, $190, 2oz silver coin going with movie representations. For us, the former has the more interesting design, the latter the more relevant images, so take your pick.

Often the hottest release in the aftermarket, the 14k gold coin has great design this year, so may well achieve that status again, with a claim of a 77% sell-out already. Depicting the two characters back to back with silhouette portraits behind, we think it’s a cool design. A bit pricey at $750 perhaps.

Lastly, is the ½oz four-coin silver subscription set. Coins depict the logo, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, all in a similar style, and like the wole range of coins released, are beautifully packaged in themed boxes. Those that subscribe instead of going the individual route will get a free collecttion box with the last coin. At $50 each, the price isn’t too bad at all given the licensing fees the RCM must have to cough up.

Overall, they’ve done a good job this year. A nice mix of metals and price-points, with some good design. We’ve also previously done articles on the 2013, 2014, 2015, and the first $20 for $20 coin.

3D LENTICULAR CUPRONICKEL

While debate rages over whether he is a saviour or a false god, SUPERMAN has become widely known following the destruction of METROPOLIS in Man of SteelTM. Meanwhile, BATMAN has always preferred to remain in the shadows and rarely allows more than a fleeting glimpse of him in action. As a result, the DARK KNIGHT is considered a vigilante by most—and a myth by others. While the two characters seem worlds apart they share a common purpose in the fight for justice that makes them “two sides of the same coin”—as symbolized on this exclusive coin.

The reverse design features a dual image that shifts between two ultra-modern, stylized silhouettes of SUPERMAN and BATMAN. The first image plays with light and shadows to present the silhouette of SUPERMAN in motion, his cape spread out behind him as he sails through the air and into action. Negative space within Superman’s silhouette cleverly uses the red background to recreate the red S-shield that is famously emblazoned across Superman’s chest. As the coin is tipped, lenticular (3D-like) technology causes the image to change to a second frame, which is a silhouette of BATMAN against a dark grey background. The cape that stretches from one side of the coin to the other is now webbed, as a bat’s wings would be. The white of Batman’s eyes emerge from the pointed cowl, while the physique that previously bore Superman’s iconic symbol is now filled in as BATMAN springs into action in the shadows.

THE TRINITY ONE-OUNCE

They are three of Earth’s greatest heroes, and together they form a trinity in the DC COMICS pantheon of SUPER HEROES. Each has become a cultural icon—set apart by their experiences, abilities and philosophies. They are three very distinct heroes who are nonetheless brought together by a common purpose.

Your coin combines the application of robust colour over intricate engraving to bring to life these artistic depictions of WONDER WOMAN, SUPERMAN and BATMAN—the “trinity” of the DC COMICS Universe. Throughout the image’s background, carefully positioned polygon shapes are contrasted through the use of frosted finishes in order to create a stunning “shattered glass” effect; this visual element is highly symbolic, for it represents the “shattering” of what was established in Man of Steel and the challenges that lie ahead after Superman has revealed himself to the world. Within three of these shapes are the iconic SUPER HEROES themselves: WONDER WOMAN in a battle-ready stance as she holds her Phoenician-inscribed sword before her; SUPERMAN appears as a pillar of strength, his gaze steady on the horizon while the viewer’s eye is naturally drawn to the iconic red and yellow S-shield emblazoned across his chest; and BATMAN, whose gritty expression beneath his cowl adds a brooding feel to this likeness of the seasoned crime-fighter. Each super hero’s name is engraved next to them in the intricate Kryptonian syllabic writing system established by renowned Canadian linguist Dr. Christine Schreyer.

THE 14-KARAT GOLD COIN

The red and yellow S-shield on Superman’s blue costume is unmistakable as the MAN OF STEEL stands in the light and strikes a pose that conveys his incredible strength. The DARK KNIGHT is easily recognizable despite having his back turned. The dichotomy between these two characters is symbolically conveyed throughout the design—from the careful play of light and shadows that define their identities, to their positioning so that they face the opposite way from one another.

Their different styles and points-of-view may bring them at odds with one another despite their common purpose, but there are also many similarities between them that make BATMAN and SUPERMAN “two sides of the same coin,” as represented in your coin’s design.
Your coin brings together vibrant colour and beautifully detailed engraving in this depiction of SUPERMAN and BATMAN standing back to back. The red and yellow S-shield on Superman’s blue costume is unmistakable as the MAN OF STEEL stands in the light and strikes a pose that conveys his incredible strength. Adding a sense of movement and energy to the design, his red cape billows softly around him and strikes a colourful contrast against the dark, shadowy figure of BATMAN. Thanks to the pointed ears of his cowl, the DARK KNIGHT is easily recognizable despite having his back turned to the viewer. The dichotomy between these two characters is symbolically conveyed throughout the design—from the careful play of light and shadows that define their identities, to their positioning so that they face the opposite way from one another. In the background, their side profiles are rendered as frosted silhouettes that continue this theme; and yet, these two SUPER HEROES share many similarities and in some sense, are “two sides of the same coin.” Behind them, polygon shapes are carefully positioned and contrasted through the use of frosted finishes, so as to create a stunning “shattered glass” effect; this visual element is highly symbolic, for it represents the “shattering” of what was established in Man of Steel and the challenges that lie ahead after SUPERMAN has revealed himself to the world.

FOUR COIN HALF-OUNCE SUBSCRIPTION SET

Fearing the actions of a god-like SUPER HERO left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’ most revered, modern-day saviour, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with BATMAN and SUPERMAN at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Established with firm Canadian roots, SUPERMAN was the first SUPER HERO, spawning countless new characters in the DC COMICS pantheon.  He was the inspiration for a new archetype that not only still exists today, but is more popular than ever.  Many important Canadian visionaries continue to shape the DC COMICS Universe even today, lending their talents as storytellers and further building on the history that began in 1938.

While debate rages over whether he is a “saviour” or a “false god,” SUPERMAN has become widely known following the destruction of METROPOLIS in Man of Steel. Meanwhile, BATMAN has always preferred to remain in the shadows and rarely allows more than a fleeting glimpse of him in action; as a result, the DARK KNIGHT is considered a vigilante by most, and a possible myth by others. The two characters seem worlds apart—particularly when one possesses superpowers and the other relies on stealth—yet they share a common purpose in the fight for justice. The coin’s reverse symbolically brings together their two logos to create a single one, which embodies both the differences and similarities between these iconic SUPER HEROES.
Subscribe today and then relax knowing you will receive all four! Coins in your subscription include:

Frosted finishes add a contrasting element to the polygon shapes that create a stunning “shattered glass” effect; this dramatic visual symbolizes the “shattering” of what was established in the previous film, Man of Steel. As part of the intricate, ultra-modern design, each super hero’s name is engraved next to them in the intricate Kryptonian syllabic writing system. Receive a FREE custom case with your last coin! TWO OUNCE SILVER COIN

A close-up of SUPERMAN in the midst of a confrontation; WONDER WOMAN ready to deflect any projectile; BATMAN in anticipation of his opponent’s move. Carefully positioned polygons create a shattered glass effect. This is highly symbolic: it represents the shattering of what was established in Man of Steel and the challenges that lie ahead after SUPERMAN has revealed himself to the world.

Your coin features vibrant colour over intricate engraving that results in striking depictions of SUPERMAN, WONDER WOMAN and BATMAN in action, with each distinctive SUPER HERO occupying a separate segment of the design. At the top, a close-up of SUPERMAN finds the MAN OF STEEL in the midst of a confrontation, as viewed from the perspective of his foe; with his fist raised, he bears an angry, intent expression on his face while his red cape rises up behind him to denote movement. In the middle segment, WONDER WOMAN keeps her sword in its sheath on her back; but she projects a steely glare as she crosses her forearms in front of her, with bracelets in position to deflect any projectile. In the bottom portion of the reverse, the silhouettes of eight bats in flight can be seen behind BATMAN, whose iconic costume is temporarily replaced by metallic battle armour, as he raises his hand in anticipation of his opponent’s move. As a common element throughout the design, the background is filled with carefully positioned polygon shapes that are contrasted through the use of frosted finishes, effectively creating a “shattered glass” effect; this is highly symbolic, for it represents the “shattering” of what was established in Man of Steel and the challenges that lie ahead after SUPERMAN has revealed himself to the world.
