The Legend of Robin Hood returns to numismatics with a detail-packed, high-relief silver issue from T&S Coin
Robin Hood has been a cultural legend in England for centuries, but has travelled far and wide since Victorian times. The story of a man giving up wealth to fight injustice, literally robbing the rich to feed the poor, resonates especially strongly today, at a time when wealth inequality has reached ridiculous proportions. It’s been a staple of the film and TV world for decades, and has appeared on a few coins as well, most recently on a trio of bullion coins from the Royal Mint.
The latest to take up the challenge is T & S Coin, who’ve built up a solid reputation with a string of quality designs over the last couple of years. Their take on the Robin Hood myth follows their signature style of a rimless, high-relief, antique-finished silver coin, with gilded highlights, and a two-ounce weight. It’s one of the best balanced formats in use today, we believe.
In our opinion, the design is another outstanding one, and our favourite rendering of the legend on a coin to date. The coin is packed to the rim with detail. Pride of place goes to Robin Hood, dressed in classic garb, holding a bow, and crouching in the trees by the side of a track. On that track is a fancy carriage drawn by two horses, escorted by a pair of mounted soldiers. It’s clear that this is Robin’s target. In the background is a terrific scene of medieval pastoral England, with a stone church dominating. We particularly love the tiny details, so go find the rabbit…
The obverse is the common T&S design, excellent in its own right, which carries the emblem of Cameroon in this case. The coin will come boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity, with a mintage is limited to 500 pieces. It’s available to order now, with shipping due to commence mid-July. A first-class representation of one of the English-speaking world’s greatest legends, and one likely to resonate today.
