On September 09th, Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest ruling monarch in British history, holding the throne for an amazing 63 years, seven months and two days. An incredibly popular Queen, Elizabeth impressed the British people with her work during the Second World War, and has remained well respected to this day. She is the most widely travelled head of state in history, and only 1 in 7 people in the world today have ever seen somebody else on the British throne. Her portrait has adorned simply countless numbers of coins and banknotes, and her face is likely the most recognised of any human being alive today.

It’s patently obvious that numismatic commemorations will abound and one of those participating is the Western Australian, Perth Mint. There are three coins coming from Perth, a pair of gold coins carrying the same design, and a much more interesting silver coin struck in what the Perth Mint calls ‘Intaglio’ style, which is basically a form of incused strike in which the artwork is struck into the coin instead of being raised above it as normal. The silver is also a far more intricate design than the gold and a superior one in our view. The 2oz gold does include an inset aquamarine gemstone inset into the crown, but it remains a fairly pedestrian design.

The Perth Mint is honoured to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the longest reigning British monarch. Queen Elizabeth II is Britain’s 40th monarch since William the Conqueror was crowned in 1066.

Her coronation took place on 2 June 1953, more than a year after the death of King George VI.
