It’s the highlight of the annual bullion calendar again with the release of the designs for the Perth Mints multiple series. The big news this year is the launch of a new 1 oz silver Kangaroo coin with an unlimited mintage. At least for this year the design is the same as the perennial, never-changing 1 kg gold version, but we’re still unsure if this is to be a permanent design. It would be unusual if it were. A significant change revolves around anti-counterfeit technology. “Offering a new security detail, the coin includes an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter ‘A’, which can be found within the first A of AUSTRALIA. It is only detectable under a magnifying glass and is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.” The gold carries on as usual, this year, like the 2015, with another fine design, reversing some lacklustre designs in the years prior.

The gold and silver lunar range remains unchanged except for the obvious designs incorporating the monkey. The Kookaburra and Koala both have great designs, especially the former, and the 10 oz Koala has disappeared from the range, but the 1 oz now has a limited mintage – 300,000. The 10 oz remains in the Kookaburra range and is a great size to show off the artwork without splurging on a kilo. The platinum Platypus remains unchanged.

They’ll be a staggered launch. To quote the Perth Mint ” To satisfy the expected high level of demand, The Perth Mint will release the program over the next five months.  In September, the gold Kangaroo and new silver Kangaroo will be available, followed by the gold and silver Lunar issues in October, the Kookaburra in November, and the Koala and Platypus in January.”

2016 KANGAROO

The kangaroo is the largest marsupial surviving on earth today. The animal’s distinctive style of movement, hopping on its hind legs whilst using its large, muscular tail for balance, means it is one of the only animals which is unable to move backwards easily. A recognisable symbol of Australia, the kangaroo features in the Australian national emblem alongside the emu.

SILVER: The Perth Mint is pleased to present the 2016 Australian Kangaroo 1oz Silver Bullion Coin for the first time. The coin’s reverse portrays the classic red kangaroo design by Dr Stuart Devlin AO CMG, goldsmith and jeweller to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

As a Perth Mint first, the coin includes an authentication feature on the reverse. In the form of a micro-laser engraved letter ‘A’ which is within the first A of AUSTRALIA, it is only detectable under a magnifying glass. The authentication feature is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited providing peace of mind to our customers. This bullion coin is presented without capsule in protective acrylic tubes of 25 coins. There are 10 tubes to a monster box.

GOLD: A kangaroo is the most instantly recognisable wildlife symbol of Australia. The Perth Mint is releasing four small gold bullion coins portraying a kangaroo resting on its haunches with the silhouette of another kangaroo in the background. The largest Australian Kangaroo coin (1 kg)portrays a classic red kangaroo design by Dr Stuart Devlin AO CMG, goldsmith and jeweller to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

No more than 100,000 1/2oz coins, 150,000 1/4oz coins and 200,000 1/10oz coins will be produced. Mintage of the 1oz and 1 kilo coins are unlimited.

2016 LUNAR YEAR OF THE MONKEY

These magnificent gold coins celebrate the Year of the Monkey, the ninth animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac.

SILVER: Each coin’s reverse depicts an adult monkey and a baby monkey sitting in a peach tree. The baby is holding a peach, which is symbolic of longevity and immortality. The Chinese character for ‘monkey’ and the inscription ‘Year of the Monkey’ also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.

No mintage limit applies to 1 kilo, 10oz, 5oz, 2oz and 1/2oz coins. Except for the 1 kilo release, production of these coins will close at the end of 201 6 when The Perth Mint will declare each coin’s official mintage. A maximum of 150 10 kilo coins will also be produced on a mint-to-order basis. Similarly, production will close at the end of 201 6, when the coin’s mintage will be declared.
