Instead of taking a style of architecture, or a look at a single building, Imperial Art showcases a selection of the incredible structures of some of [...]

Not so much in the way of nuggets this week as we've been busy with back-end stuff agin, tidying up more guides to bring them up to date and be more readable. We're going to continue doing this, as well as adding more bullion coin guides instead of the numismatic-orientated Coin Series Profiles over the next few weeks. News will carry on as usual. The Numismatic Guaranty [...]

2014-2017 GODS & GODDESSES by the Perth Mint Antique finish and a high-relief strike, two-ounce (62.2g) in weight, and featuring ancient mythology as a subject matter. This is a pretty good description of one of the hottest trends in commemorative coins over the last couple of years and here's a guide to the series that kicked it all off. Launching in early 2014 with little fanfare, Zeus, the first in [...]

By |2016-11-05T06:30:57+00:00May 29th, 2016|Categories: Marketwatch, News|

Obviously lots of little stories don't warrant a full, and often time-consuming post, so hopefully, every Sunday we'll do a little news nugget round-up of the week with all the bits of news we accumulate. A mix of new coin updates, mint reports and variants, site updates and additions. No doubt the variety will increase in future and we can post a lot of bits we'd normally have missed or not [...]

NORSE GODS by (2015) MDM Deutsche Munze

By |2021-10-30T21:46:25+01:00May 7th, 2016|Categories: , |

Ancient gods have spawned a healthy new selection of numismatics over the last couple of years, featuring deities worshipped in ancient times. Fortunately in those polytheistic times, there were no shortage of gods and thus no shortage of subjects for new coins. Equally fortunately, most of them are resplendent with striking imagery and fascinating stories of their origins and adventures. First choices are usually the Roman or Greek gods, but we think the Norse [...]

New silver coin in the nine-coin Norse Gods series surfaces online, featuring Mrs Odin

By |2016-11-05T06:31:01+00:00April 28th, 2016|Categories: Art & Literature, Silver, Cook Islands|

One of the bigger sets of coins featuring Norse mythology, the nine-coin Norse Gods series debuted last September with a pair depicting the two big guns, Odin and Thor. The second pair arrived in November and featured two lesser deities, Hel and Tyr. February saw some more high profile Asgardians, Heimdall and Loki, so with six coins already out there, we're down to the last three. First of those to break [...]

Late to the party but in with style, the Perth Mint releases Odin, the first Norse Gods coin

By |2016-11-05T06:31:13+00:00February 29th, 2016|Categories: Art & Literature, Silver, Perth Mint, Tuvalu|

Without question, one of the biggest trends in the latter half of last year was the surge in popularity of coins featuring ancient mythology. More specifically, gods. Even more specifically, Odin. Kicked off in style with the superb Legends of Asgard 3 oz max-relief coin from Choice Mint, it was swiftly followed by a nine-coin series called Norse Gods, a coin from Gainesville struck by the Helvetic Mint, and a fifteen-coin [...]

Norse Gods series of Cook Islands coins continues with Heimdall and the God of Mischief, Loki

By |2016-11-05T06:31:16+00:00February 14th, 2016|Categories: Art & Literature, Culture, Silver, Cook Islands|

Back in September 2015, amidst a run of new coins featuring the old Norse deities, a new nine-coin series of antiqued silver coins debuted called Norse Gods. Despite the launch  being blunted somewhat by a plethora of similarly themed coins also announced in the same timeframe, so many in fact that we ran an Ancient Gods Week to cover them all, the coins cool design and relatively cheap price in what [...]

By |2016-11-05T06:31:31+00:00November 13th, 2015|Categories: Art & Literature, Culture, Silver, Cook Islands|

It was just two short month's ago that a new nine-coin series of antiqued silver coins debuted called Norse Gods. The launch of a pair of attractive and reasonably priced coins was blunted somewhat by the sheer number of similarly themed coins also announced in the same timeframe, so many in fact that we ran an Ancient Gods Week to cover them all. The first duo depicted possibly the [...]

By |2016-11-05T06:31:43+00:00September 8th, 2015|Categories: Art & Literature, Culture, Silver, Niue Island, NZ Mint|

Our Ancient Gods Week may be over, but the genre continues to see new entrants. This time we see one of the originators of the modern trend for ancient mythology series, the New Zealand Mint, head back with a different take on the concept. Instead of featuring the main gods and beings that make up the great ancient pantheons, the mint has taken the concept off centre and aimed itself at some of the [...]

Gainesville Coins Heidi Wastweet designed Odin coin is finally shipping. New images now up

By |2016-11-05T13:21:14+00:00January 11th, 2016|Categories: News|

Back last September as part of our Ancient Gods week, we covered a new Odin coin, the first of a four-coin set, from US coin dealer Gainesville. Designed by noted coin sculptor Heidi Wastweek, the original artwork looked quite excellent, especially the enhancements made to what is usually a dull obverse on a coin issued for Niue. The full post can be viewed HERE, so we're not going to go over all the details [...]
