After the surprising decision to release a 1.5-ounce silver bullion coin last year, the Royal Canadian Mint has followed it for 2014 with an attractive Arctic Fox coin. The new coin has identical specifications to the Polar Bear from 2013, mainly a 37.5mm diameter, 4.5mm thick, 0.9999 silver round with the Susannah Blunt portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. The reverse is really attractive in our view, with well defined detail and a natural pose. The artist is acclaimed Canadian, Maurice Gervais.

The coins are available in tubes of 15, or boxes of 300 for the stackers, but they seem to be more expensive than two 1oz Maples, so not a bargain by any means. It’s being sold in the US as a semi-numismatic coin, but whether the coin is susceptible to the spotting issue that affects the Maple and even my own Polar Bear, remains to be seen. It’s annoying on the Maple, but inexcusable on a coin like this. Here’s hoping…
