MDM and the Solomon Islands release a three silver coin set showcasing our favourite subject – Dinosaurs!

You can never have enough dinosaur coins, in my view, so we’re always pleased to see something new. This time, it’s German producer MDM doing the honours with an all new three-coin set of one ounce fine silver coins. MDM have been releasing a few prehistoric coins of late, our favourite of which is a big copper/silver hybrid Tyrannosaurus Rex, the first in a new series. They also have a 12-coin minigold series that we haven’t covered yet.

Each of the three coins in this set depicts a single animal and they’ve wisely chosen some of the most well known prehistoric animals to populate them. There’s a couple of predators, the huge Tyrannosaurus Rex (of course!!), and the rapid pack-hunting Velociraptor, and a huge herbivore, the iconic three horned Triceratops. Any fan of the Jurassic Park movies will be right at home with this lineup.

The style of these is a bit different from the usual and incorporates some really neat touches. The main element is a decent image of the dinosaur, highlighted with a clever shadow done in parallel lines. A small circular area holds a footprint in stoned that sits on a bas-relief style background which is heavily stylised in appearance. The T-Rex one is particularly cool, showing a volcano that’s erupted because of the Chicxulub asteroid strike, that was the death knell of the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago.

The coins are not available seperately, but in a neatly presented set, of which there will be 999 minted. The obverse of each Solomon Islands issued coin is a simple effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, who reportedly kept a pet velociraptor back before the asteroid hit… All told, a neat set, not pushing any boundaries, but with a distinct style of its own.
