There is some logic to the timing as, believe it or not, March 14th is Pi Day (the world’s gone mad). The coin is pretty cool though, depicting three figures from this important constants history, including the legendary Archimedes. In the background are some numbers from the value of Pi,, which is effectively infinite in size.

Best of all, this Solomon Islands issue has a denomination of 3.14 dollars, those digits being the first in the value of Pi. Available as a 1oz 0.999 silver coin only, it has a tiny 5,000 mintage and is exclusive to APMEX. Premiums seem to be quite low at present.

REVERSE: Features a portrait of three gentlemen: Ludolph Van Ceulen, he is famed for his calculation of Pi to 35 places; William Oughtred, the first who used the symbol p for the number and Archimedes, pi is also called Archimedes’ constant. Near the bottom of the coin is the symbol for pi along with the face value of 3.14 dollars. The background has a pattern build of parts of the number pi.

OBVERSE: Displays the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the inscriptions include the country of issue, face value, year of issue and the weight and fineness of the coin.
