Fan favourite Trek movie, The Wrath of Khan, is immortalised on a new premium silver foil

One of the New Zealand Mint’s premium foil ranges, Star Trek Movies reproduces some of the original classic movie posters on the mints biggest silver foil format. Called Premium Silver Foil, these are way bigger than the more numerous banknote-sized coin-notes, and they come in at an expansive 262 x 175 mm ( compared to 150 x 70 mm) and weigh a healthy 35 grams. Because of this, they make a superb basis for poster (or book cover) art.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture launched just three months ago, and while it was the movie that popularised the reimagined  science-fiction franchise, it was arguably not a great one. It had the core of what made Trek popular, but was a cold, matter-of-fact affair that lacked the soul of the best of the television episodes. All changed just three years later with the premiere of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Taking an original series episode as a backstory, WoK was a cracking adventure story, full of scene-chewing acting and exciting space battles. Ricardo Montalban stole the show as one of sci-fi’s greatest villains and the gut-wrenching death of Spock capped the movie with a scene many thought would never happen. It was popular then and is widely considered by far the best Trek movie ever made.

The poster is a good one and full of artistic touches that are very much indicative of the late 70’s and early 80’s. This would be a colourful and attractive centrepiece to a Star Trek memorabilia display and this is surely where the NZ Mint are aiming these. The foil is sealed in a acrylic display frame that can be stood up or wall mounted. It isn’t a coin and carries no legal tender. With a mintage of 50,000 pieces, you should have little issue picking one up and they retail for $130.00 USD.
