Justice League is the latest blockbuster superhero movie to appear on a coin note series
It isn’t just Star Trek and Star Wars that is getting the coin note treatment. The New Zealand Mint is today releasing the first of six Justice League coins, each based on a character from the blockbuster DC Comics Universe movie. The characters featured are all good guys and encompass Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg and Superman.
The second most expensive movie ever made, it has debuted to mixed reviews but is generally a fun romp with a mix of decent acting and poor cgi. Grossing around $700m and rising, this is the fifth movie in the DC universe and many more are planned. More coin notes are also planned for DC comics later this year so if you like these it’s going to be a good year for you.
Like the previous two sci-fi series, these are five grams of 0.999 silver in weight and a banknote-sized 150 x 70 mm in dimension. At less than the thickness of a human hair, relief is not realistic so it falls to colour and engraving to create appeal. The first coin depicts Ben Afflecks interpretation of Batman and we think it’s a good piece of artwork. Future coins have a similar visual style and the set will grow to form a tightly knit and cohesive whole. The obverse is a banknote-style series of patterns with the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in the centre.
Again, it’s all held together by a solid and attractive album that comes free with the first coin and only the first coin. There’s no other way to get one than with the Batman issue, but with a mintage of 50,000 pieces, you should be able to get this issue if you so desire. The price remains at the same $39.00 USD that applied to the Star Wars and Star Trek coins and will be available to order later today.
2018 JUSTICE LEAGUE COIN NOTES
MINTS DESCRIPTION
In celebration of the 2017 film, this first striking 5g pure silver coin note in the Justice League Collection features striking images of the caped crusader with the iconic BatmanTM emblem. The combination of engraving and colour printing creates an interesting dimension. The unique number in the mintage is also printed on to the note.
This first silver coin note in our new Justice League Silver Coin Note Collection comes complete with a six-note collector’s album. Each page is designed to complement the coin note – including a brief summary of the character’s contribution to the film.
OBVERSE
PACKAGING
Obviously, these are far larger than a coin and capsules aren’t really an option for the ultra-thin coin note format, so the New Zealand Mint decision to provide an album for the series is a fine one. Stiff covered and provided with a slipcase to hold it, the album is fully themed throughout and contains a two-page spread for each issue – one side carrying a description of the coin, the other holding the coin safely and securely.
One important point to note however, the album is completely free with the first coin, but will not be available seperately and will not be provided with any other coin. If you’re going to buy the set, you’ll definitely want to make sure you get the first Batman issue.
