Australia debuts Kangaroos at Dawn, a knockout new modern interpretation of its classic designs

REVERSEPACKAGING

Long a classic of modern Australian coin designs, Stuart Devlin’s iconic ‘Mob of Roos‘ has inspired multiple award-winning designs over the intervening years, such as the gorgeous silhouette-style issues like the Kangaroo at Sunset that was retired last year.

Designed by Aleksandra Stokic, a former coin designer from the Italian Mint that has worked in Australia since 2011, it’s a terrific blend of modern and almost aboriginal styles that depicts this ultra-iconic Australian marsupial in a new way. We particularly like the blended mix of flora and city skyline that fills the foreground, and the sun with the angular clouds passing across it in the background.

The obverse is devoid of any customisation and features the new Jody Clark effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the coin issue details. It’s boring, of course, but par for the course with Australian issues, unfortunately. Packaging is standard Royal Australian Mint fare, comprising a neat box and a colourful themed shipper.

Available now, this half-ounce proof silver coin is a welcome addition to an iconic range of coins going back years and obviously the series remains in good hands. An excellent issue. $60 AUD.
