Last of the original Star Wars trilogy gets its poster on a premium silver foil

Despite having already appeared on the NZ Mints poster coin series, the reissue on the mints large premium silver foils is still welcome as they seem a better fit for the artwork. While the original coins were 53 x 36 mm in size, these giant foils expand out to a huge 262 x 175 mm – an increase of 24 times the area. It’s quite impressive when you consider there’s only four grams difference in the weight (35 v 31 grams).

Both of the earlier movies, A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, are already available in this fledgling format, so the appearance of Return of the Jedi was wholly expected. It looks as good as you would expect, but we remain a little disappointed that one of the numerous other official posters for the movie wasn’t chosen instead. Variety is always good, and this poster already has numismatic representation.

Easy to display, the foil, because of its extremely thin nature, is sealed in an acrylic frame that can be stood up, or wall mounted. Unlike the Star Trek movie poster foils which carry no denomination, the Star Wars foils are legal tender in Niue and have the relevant information inscribed on the obverse. A relatively high mintage of 10,000 and a wide-ranging dealer network, means these should be easy to pick up.
