It’s a baguette! Its silver, and gilded, but it’s a baguette! Mon dieu!!!

We know dimensional coins are an increasingly popular thing in coin circles these days. We know that food-based subjects on coins are not uncommon either. What would you get if you combined the two? Well, if you’re French, you get a baguette shaped coin!

An ounce in weight and with silk finish gilding for that added ‘fresh from the oven’ look, this is an unusual piece to be sure, and you have to admire just how much it does look like a French-style baguette, albeit just 55 mm long. It’s issued for Gabon, so that nations coat of arms is set on the obverse,

Topping it off for full effect is some very appropriate presentation, comprising a drawstring gingham bag and a display frame, all in a themed shipper. The whole thing is a charming homage to a staple of French Life. It’s produced by CIT, so the quality will be first class, and is issued by French dealer eMonnaies, so head on over there if you want one. I can’t say I started the week expecting to write about a smartminted silver baguette, but now I want one. Strange times indeed…
