2019 ICONS OF MARVEL: IRON MAN

The last few years has since the emergence and increasing popularity of the dimensional coin. Starting with some crude and not particularly attractive models on coins, the type moved to coins that literally took on a custom shape. CIT Coin Invest have issued quite a few over the last couple of years, with such subjects as skulls, animals and cultural icons like Tutankhamun’s mask and a Totem Pole.

The latest icon is one from popular culture and the incredibly lucrative Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The first in a new series called Marvel Icons, there’s probably no better subject to start with than the visage of Iron Man. While officially the MCU started before the 2008 movie Iron Man, this is widely accepted as the film that kicked it off in its current form. The Iron Man helmet has certainly attained classic status and this numismatic interpretation of it is spot on. A little under 2″ in height, it weighs two ounces and is issued for Fiji.

The presentation looks good. The certificate of authenticity is one of S&A’s silver ones, formed in two grams of the metal instead of being printed on paper. The black box looks to be well made and it’s all wrapped up in a themed shipper. The mintage of 5,000 is a little more than most coins like this, but the subject is a wildly more popular one than normal, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Priced around the €180 mark, it should start to ship in a couple of weeks time and is being distributed by LPM HK..
