Holy investment opportunity, Batman!! The Dark Knight hits the bullion market with a new gold and silver coin

With the big success of Star Wars and Disney bullion coins, the New Zealand Mint is now trying its hand at shoehorning its many Warner Brothers licences into the market as well. It’s a good idea. The Perth Mint and LPM have long issued silver bullion coins based on the expansive Marvel Comics portfolio, also with great success, so why not bring DC to the fight.

Batman is the obvious choice for this first coin and its a decent, quite dynamic looking design featuring Batman swooping through a Gotham skyline with the famous Batsignal in the sky. Like almost all the NZ Mint DC output, the design is firmly rooted in the comics rather than the movies, and we’re happy with that, as it’s considerably more timeless.

Nothing too unusual about this issue. Available as a 1oz 0.999 silver or as a 1oz 0.9999 gold, they have mintages of 15,000 and 150 respectively. These figures have become quite common over the last couple of years as the industry has moved from fewer high mintage coins, to a vastly expanded selection of low mintage ones – a positive step, we feel.

The coin is exclusive to German dealer EMK, although we don’t doubt that others will pick them up from there. A good release, from a respected mint, with mintages just about right. The coins come encapsulated, although you can buy the silver coin in monster boxes of 250 pieces. The mintage fits in just 60 of those, so quite a rare thing. If the premiums are decently tight, this seems a good buy. Available to order soon, with shipping in February.
