Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 joins the growing selection of Marvel Universe silver coins

If there can be anything that the word phenomenon can be applied to in the movie world, it’s the success of the Marvel Comics Universe (MCU). After decades of failing to repeat the critical acclaim that DC enjoyed with its early Christopher Reeve Superman and Michael Keaton Batman movies, a new direction has brought not only fan adoration, but extraordinary financial rewards. With Guardians of the Galaxy being the fifteenth movie in the series, and many more planned, it won’t be giving up its title of biggest franchise in movie history any time soon.

Case in point was the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Expectations wern’t high originally; a low-profile comic and not a hugely popular one, it seemed a strange choice to follow the big guns like Iron Man and Thor. What we got was, in my view at least, one of the best movies that year, a gloriously entertaining romp that sums up what a summer blockbuster should be about. To say the sequel movie is anticipated would be an understatement, early buzz being hugely positive.

The coin set follows on from many others from the same producer, Doctor Strange, Captain America, Spiderman and The Avengers, amongst others, have all been released over the last couple of years. This set comprises five fine-silver coins, each weighing half an ounce and with selective colouring on the reverse face. The employment of CIT’s superb smartminting technology means that despite the low weight, they still managae to make 38.6 mm in diameter, so the price is lower but the look is the same. They’re said to be struck in an ultra high-relief format, but that isn’t visible on the official images. All the coins are issued for the Cook Islands and so carry the Queens effigy on the obverse.

Presentation is always the key with movie memorabilia and this doesn’t disappoint. A lunchbox-sized lithographed tin holds a selection of extras. Each coin comes in its own unique cylindrical tin which are laid out inside the big one, along with two label pins, one with Groot on it, the other with the team logo. A large 33 x 23″ movie poster is also included, along with a certificate of authenticity. The price is around the $300 and it should ship towards the end of April.
