From Star Wars to DC Comics, the NZ Mint takes dimensional face coins to the dark world of the Caped Crusader

The NZ Mint has had great success with its Star Wars Helmets range of dimensional silver coins and has now decided to take the concept into the DC Comics Universe. For those unaware, these are what we call dimensional coins, employing both a shaped outline and a high-relief strike. The result is highly distinctive, not just from other coin ranges, but from release to release within a range.

First in this DC range is, of course, the uber-iconic Caped Crusader himself, Batman. Like most of the mints DC Comics output, the look chosen for the coin is firmly rooted in the comics themselves, rather than one of the countless movie or TV incarnations. We like that decision a lot, as the comic look is far more long-lived and consistent than the temperamental movie world where everything has to be ‘reinvented’ for merchandising purposes.

This is a two-ounce fine silver coin, struck to a proof finish, and packing just enough detail to get the characters look across without tying it to a specific run. From the images, it looks crisp and bang on. High quality presentation, as you would expect from this mint, and a fairly large mintage of 5,000 pieces, so none of the Chibi shortages that have plagued that series. A touch pricey at $230 USD, but it’s a licenced property and a very unique piece, so that’s understandable. Available to order from today.
