Doctor Who is back on coins with the launch of a swansong for Peter Capaldi’s twelfth doctor

When the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who came around back in 2013, the New Zealand Mint was on point to issue a range of silver and gold commemorative coins to mark the milestone event. Hugely successful,  the range debuted with a TARDIS coin in some innovative packaging, before moving on to a huge twelve-coin set of Doctors in a giant fob watch replica packaging and a five-coin set of monsters.

Now the Doctor is back with a new annual coin release based around the seasons rather than the characters or objects in this huge sci-fi universe. It’s a good time to start with Season 10 of New Who coming to an end along with the era of Peter Capaldi. The coin reverse depicts a composite selection of all the main characters, both the Doctor and companions, and some enemies. It’s an attractive mix for the Who fan and inscriptions are kept unobtrusive.

The obverse is a standard Niue one from the New Zealand Mint, depicting the effigy of the head of the Commonwealth of which Niue is part, Queen Elizabeth II. Coin issue details are inscribed around the effigy. Packaging is a variant of the mints Warriors of History style and we like those immensely as they’re neat and easy to store or display.

Struck in an ounce of 99.9% silver, the coin comes with a serialised certificate of authenticity. Available to order now, the coin has a mintage limited to 10,000 pieces. Buyers can pick the coin up from official dealers like Minted-UK for £70.00, Powercoin, or from the NZ Mint store.

2017 DOCTOR WHO SILVER COIN

MINTS DESCRIPTION

Played by Scottish actor Peter Capaldi, the Doctor was a huge departure from his previous character of note, Malcolm Tucker, the potty-mouthed government spin doctor in the hit political comedy, The Thick of It. Capaldi’s first full appearance as the Doctor was at the end of the 2013 Christmas special “The Time of the Doctor“. On 30 January 2017, Capaldi announced he would be leaving the programme after the 2017 Christmas episode, “Twice Upon a Time“. He is to be succeeded by Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor.

This Doctor’s companions include Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), with whom he travelled in the eighth and ninth series, as well as Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) and Nardole (Matt Lucas), who joined the crew in series ten and are depicted on the coin.

The Twelfth Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the BBC science fiction television programme Doctor Who. Within the series’ narrative, the Doctor is a time travelling, humanoid alien from a race known as the Time Lords. When the Doctor is critically injured, he can regenerate his body, and in doing so gain a new physical appearance, and with it a distinct new personality; this plot mechanism has allowed the Doctor to be portrayed by a series of actors over the decades since the programme’s inception in 1963. Capaldi’s portrayal of the Doctor is a spiky, brusque, contemplative, and pragmatic character who conceals his emotions in the course of making tough and sometimes ruthless decisions.
