Batmans first solo comic book has its cover immortalised on a new silver foil
2018 BATMAN #1
While his first appearance was in May 1939’s Detective Comics #1, Batman didn’t get his own comic until the publication of Batman #1 in the Spring of 1940. With a run that continues to this day, Batman comics have introduced a whole universe of esoteric and ruthless villains and heroes. The cover of issue #1 even features the Boy Wonder himself, Robin, of which there have been several through Batman’s comic history. No.1 also introduced both Catwoman and The Joker, although it wasn’t until issue #4 that Gotham was first mentioned, and issue #5 before he got a Batmobile. It was the 1970’s before he got Shark Repellent Batspray…
As with the previous three issues of the New Zealand Mint’s DC Comics foil series, this is part of their ‘premium’ foil range and is an expansive 262 x 175 mm in size, and 35 grams in weight. Also like its three forebears, the cover is reproduced very closely, but with the original background colour (in this case yellow) removed to allow the silver behind the show through. It’s a subtle difference, but one that refreshes the artwork without fundamentally changing it. Available to order today for around $130.00 USD, it will ship in early September. A pretty cool item for the avid Golden Age comic collector.
