Classic time travel adventure, Back To The Future is 35 years old and Niue marks the time and date in silver

Released in 1985, the Robert Zemeckis directed time-travel comedy ‘Back to the Future’, was a huge critical and commercial success, spawning two sequels. The combination of a top-notch script, first-class direction and perfect casting (headlined by Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd), led to the movie franchise remaining one of the most popular to this day.

With movie and other media focused coins remaining popular, we’re not surprised to see Back to the Future return to coins after a visit by the Perth Mint back in 2015. This one is a little more unusual than most, at least on the presentation front. The coin is a one-ounce proof with colouring on the reverse face. A depiction of the iconic De Lorean heading back in time takes pride of place, with the franchise logo at the top, and the old-style digital time display at the bottom. A far better looking coin than the 2015 issue, in our opinion.

The coin does share a quirk with the Perth Mint’s old version – unusual custom presentation. The 2015 coin came in a small model De Lorean, but this one is presented in a replica of the power system that Doc picked up in the future, Mr Fusion. The lid lifts up to reveal the coin in a neat holder. We’re sure that fans will get a kick out of it and it’s an inventive choice that lovers of the movie will appreciate.

The mintage is far lower on this one as well. Capped at 2,020 instead of 7,500, it seems that The Coin Company have chosen a sensible limit given the heated competition in the movie coin market at present. There’s very little in the way of new issues for this superb trilogy of movies, so we’re fortunate that fans of Doc and Marty will find much to like here. Available to order from today, It’s being distributed, and is for sale from Direct Coins in Australia, along with all the usual dealers of movie coins around the world.

BACK TO THE FUTURE 1985

Seventeen-year-old Marty McFly is accidentally sent back in time from 1985 to 1955 in a time machine built from a DeLorean by eccentric scientist Emmett “Doc” Brown, when they are attacked by Libyan terrorists from whom Doc stole the plutonium that gives the flux capacitor the 1.21 gigawatts it needs to time-travel. Soon after his arrival in 1955, Marty’s mother Lorraine falls in love with him, rather than with his father George McFly, threatening to cause a paradox that would result in Marty ceasing to exist. Without plutonium to power the time machine, Marty must find the 1955 Doc Brown to help him reunite his parents and return to 1985.

The efforts of Biff Tannen, George’s bully and supervisor, further complicate Marty’s situation until Marty successfully causes his parents to fall in love and simultaneously convinces George to finally stand up to Biff. Returning to the future via a lightning strike that powers the machine, Marty discovers a vastly improved situation for the McFly family, as a much more confident George has become an accomplished science fiction author, Marty’s two older siblings have better lives, he owns the car of his dreams, and an apparently-softened Biff is now an auto detailer, rather than George’s supervisor. Despite 1955 Doc’s insistence on not knowing details of the future, a note Marty leaves in his pocket prevents him from being killed by the terrorists. But in the film’s final moments, Doc Brown appears in a modified version of the DeLorean and tells Marty and his girlfriend Jennifer Parker that they must travel to the future to fix a problem caused by Marty and Jennifer’s kids.(Wikipedia)
