After our recent Pobjoy Mint week in which we covered six new releases from the privately owned British mint over six consecutive days, we thought they’d be quiet for a while. Apparently that isn’t the case, and they’ve just launched details of another new silver coin, this one issued for the British Virgin Islands. Like the recent Abaham Lincoln monument coin from MNI, and another similar design sold by Silvertowne, this one has Queen Elizabeths effigy on the obverse side which we think is the next best thing to being issued by the US itself.
Mount Rushmore is an amazing location and a fine choice to adorn a coin, especially a high-relief one as this coin is. You could almost argue that striking a Mount Rushmore coin not in UHR would be a missed opportunity. It’s hard to tell how successful the strike is as the official images do the coin no justice at all, but Pobjoy certainly know their stuff and are unlikely to disappoint when the coin is in-hand.
Unlike many of Pobjoy’s coins that are minted in sterling (0.925) silver, this coin is struck in fine (0.999) silver, no doubt the purer metal being softer aiding the deep strike of the coin. Not that Pobjoy would have a problem anyway considering they actually strike Titanium coins, an immensely strong metal that apparently knackers out the dies in under ten strikes!! Not up on their e-store yet, so we can’t confirm a price, but it does come in what should be a quality box and with a certificate.
UPDATE: It’s now shown up on site at £212.50 +tax and we’ve updated the blue button link to go straight there
MINTS DESCRIPTION
Following the amazing success of our previous Ultra High Relief coins, Pobjoy Mint is delighted to announce the release of a stunning new collector’s coin on behalf of the British Virgin Islands Government which features the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. The coin also commemorates the 150th Anniversary of the Assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States of America.
The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota in the United States of America. Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Mount Rushmore features 60 foot sculptures of the heads of four United States Presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Construction started on the memorial in 1927 and the President’s faces were completed between 1934 and 1939. Mount Rushmore has become an iconic symbol of presidential greatness and attracts nearly three million visitors every year.
As a tribute to this amazing memorial and to replicate the setting of the monument within the mountains, the ultra high relief coin has been produced with the amazing sculptures of the four famous American Presidents rising above the surface, the coin is a stunning feat of engineering as is the original monument.
Available as a 1oz Fine Silver, the obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS. Each coin is detailed to perfection and struck to the highest quality to attain the famous Pobjoy Proof finish and is presented in a beautiful walnut effect box.
ADVERTISEMENTS
£212.50 for 1 oz of silver? sorry but wtf?
I was about to say the same thing! Over £200 for 1oz? Are they crazy?
Sorry, but for me the Gods of Olympus series is the benchmark when it comes to pricing. Extremely popular coins, 2oz, high relief and antiquated, less mintage etc for around £90 from the mint themselves.
Compared to this, even he Royal Mint are very cheap! £82.50 1oz silver proof Britannia? Bargain!
Thanks but no thanks!
Got to admit that’s a huge chunk more than I thought it would be, In the UK that’s £255. Major negative for me.
And other thing is that the coin is rather ugly (in my opinion).
ugliest ever!
